Did you ever notice that when you really need to save money, or be on some sort of budget, that’s when the shopping urge comes to town? I’m not a crazy shopaholic (despite what my recent lipstick purchases might otherwise suggest). I work from home, so I don’t often shop for new clothes or shoes. I think I typically spend my money on books and smelly body products if I spend it on anything.
But now, tell me that I can’t spend any money or put me on a budget of sorts and blamo, I want to spend a small fortune on things. I’m feeling the pull of online shopping!! The power is weak in this one.
Right now I’m coveting dresses of all things. I rarely wear dresses (or get that dressed up), but I joined a networking group where the ladies tend to get all dressed up. So of course, I think I now need to buy dresses (logic, I tell ya).
I’m also on a bit of a mascara kick. I’ve decided that I don’t wear make up often enough to warrant spending the big bucks on high end mascara. So I’ve been testing out all the drugstore versions to see if I can find a favorite (I’ll blog about it once I try a couple more). Of course, by now I’ve spent enough that I could have bought that Lancome Definicils already. But that’s not really the point here.
I’m also considering some new shoes and a new purse. Thank you Coach for that 25% off coupon that I don’t intend to use. Luckily, I know better than to spend $300+ just because I want a new purse. I most certainly don’t need a new purse. In fact, if truth be told, I’d much rather save that money and apply it to a 5th anniversary trip in May. But that still doesn’t get rid of this urge to shop.
So what’s a gal to do, pick up something small, but fun (like I need yet another lipstick) to curb the urge? Or do I just hold strong and avoid all stores at all costs? Or should I just consider tonight’s splurgey Girls Night Out (nice dinner and a movie) as my spend for the week?
What do you buy when you feel the urge to spend? What are you coveting right now – will you give in and get it or just covet from afar?
I’ve really wanted to shop too, but the last time I went to the mall I felt so guilty because I know I don’t have the money.
And go to the outlets for Coach, you save at least $100.
Miss Attitudes last blog post..I’m still not playing!
Ugh. I soooo relate to this dilemma! I actually dread shopping, unless my bank account is empty. When that happens, all I want is a spree. There’s some childhood deprivation issue in there, I’m sure, but what are you gonna do? A trip to DSW is so much better than a stink on the therapy couch!
Btw, don’t listen to me, but I see nothing wrong with a $300 purse.

I feel the exact same way!!! On especially rainy day like today, I get the urge to shop because I can’t be outside playing. Thank god for mostly nice LA weather, eh!? I love things like a new lipstick or eyeshadow too. But like you, I wish I more, “going out” stuff. I have jeans and hoodies for things like casual wear or work, but I don’t have a lot of stuff for a nice evening out. (not that I have much need) Right now I’m tempted to drive to Kohl’s and see if I can find pretty yet inexpensive dresses.

Sufergrrl, I do love our rainy days. You’re in a more beachy part of town, so I believe you do actually get more rain or cloudy, hazy days than we get (though we do get smoggy from time to time). So did you make it over to Kohls? I’ve been avoiding them, but I’m thinking I might at least find a cute dress or top there.
emmajames, I generally don’t see much of an issue with a $300 purse either, but I try to limit myself to once every two years or so. I did finally break down and do a bit of shopping, at Costco of all things. I bought a new book (go figure) for me and got the boys a new bed (photos on Wordless Wednesday).
Miss A, I do love the Coach outlets and I try to get my bags there when I can. I picked up a new summer bag last time I was near one and got a crazy, killer deal – purse and wallet for under $150.
