About Cooking, A Blog & A Contest

I love to cook.  I love to bake.  Unfortunately, I have a teeny tiny kitchen with absolutely no counter space.  This puts a damper on my dreams of cooking and baking.  I also have a piece of shit stove and oven.  The temperatures are way off, I think the oven leaks, and it cooks horribly uneven.  Oh, and did I mention that we can’t use our stove or over from April to October because it creates too much heat and the walled AC unit doesn’t reach into the kitchen?!  Actually, it barely reaches beyond the living room where it’s walled, but that’s an entirely different story for a hot summer day.  Ahhhh, the joys of apartment living.

Needless to say, I don’t cook or bake that much.  I tend to look upon events like book club, as my excuse to finally try something fun (I’ve learned my lesson with the in-laws that they won’t try anything they don’t recognize, so that leaves out a lot of food choices!).   But that doesn’t stop me from buying and reading cookbooks (yes, I read them like a book, page by page, cover to cover).  And it doesn’t stop me from reading cooking blogs.

My dear bloggie friend Geggie, over at GeggieBlog (Hi Geg!!) not only can point you in the direction of one of the best restaurants in Phoenix (damn was it good!), but she can also point you to some damn fine cooking blogs.  The latest in her list of referrals…Megans Cookin.  Check it out, it’s a fun-looking blog that just might leave you drooling.  Don’t say I didn’t warn  you.

Megan is also having a contest right now, just in time for Easter.  And let me just say, I do believe that I am coveting those dish towels!  If you stop by to check her out and enter, be sure to let her know that LA Blogger Gal sent you.  And if I win the basket, I’ll send you my Peeps!  Deal?

And speaking of book club, it’s time to get ready to head on over the farmer’s market.  I need to pick up some berries and granola for my contribution – I already have the yogurt at home.  I really was hoping to make the granola from scratch, but damn, I was just to wiped out this week to do much of anything.   Plus the last time I tried to make it in this oven, it just didn’t work out so well.

Happy Weekend everyone!

Can I Interest You in Some Yummy Bath & Body Products?

A fellow LWLer over at Klean Bath & Body is having a Leap Year sale. Today only you can get 29% off your total purchase with LEAP29. Folks are raving about her sugar scrubs and lotions. The chocolate scent is described as incredibly delicious by many. I’m most intrigued by the shower spritzers and body oils (love my oil from Jo Malone!)

Me, I decided to go with the unscented shea butter since I’ve been on the lookout for a good unscented lotion and the ginger tea pearlized bath& body wash. She has so many choices for scents, that I just went with something simple for my first purchase. Well, that and the fact that I just spent a small fortune on stuff for my dad last week, so I’m curtailing my own shopping urges and splurges for a bit.

And check it out, she has a sugar Scrub Club membership. You can purchase 3, 6 or 12 months worth of scrubs. What an awesome gift idea! I’m also hearing good things about the Peppermint Pattie Pedi.

So go check out her stuff, it’s all quite affordable. What else do you going on on this extra day of the year? Why not shop?!?

On the Mend

Man, what a boring ass week this has been in my blog.  This sinus infection, coughing illness thingie seems to be kicking my fat ass!  But, thanks to the joys of modern medicine, I know that I’m getting better.  And I have proof…let’s just say that “things” are “leaving” and “colors are changing” and leave it at that.  The medicine induced headache is gone as well!  And I slept through the entire night – first time in a week!  So yeah, I’m definitely on the mend.

Want to read a cool article about the business of giving things away for free?  Check out wired.com.  Very cool and somewhat fascinating stuff.

Anyone else thrilled that Dirt is back on Sunday?  What about those Hills spoilers?  Believe it or not, our DVR is running on empty these days.

So how about a good book?  Sophie Kinsella’s new book, Remember Me is here (there’s a first chapter excerpt on her site) and nary a Becky Bloomwood in sight!  And speaking of our favorite Shopaholic…Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy and Krysten Ritter star.

Hmmm…Ben or Matt?

Who would you rather be fucking?

I think the funniest parts are Brad Pitt as the Fed Ex guy and Josh Grobin. If you have the time, be sure to check out all the back videos with Matt Damon and Kimmel that lead up to the I’m Fucking Matt Damon video. It really helps to put the whole thing in perspective. And being a Bourne fan, I think that clip has to be my favorite of all of them. The red carpet clip is also a hoot. Really, just watch them all.

Self-Love Day 2008 – Get Outta the Gutter!

It’s not that kind of self-love! Snackiepoo over at Snackie’s World has something entirely different in mind: “No more “how much do I love thees”… rather ask yourself the question, “how much do I love ME?” Even if you have someone on this special day, take the time to think about yourself, list your good qualities, have some positive perspective on who you are and treat yourself better than you ever have.”

HERE ARE THE RULES!!!

1.) Post one of them there banners on your blog and declare February 14th as the day you not only love your one and only, but the day that you love yourself!
2.) Post at least, one nice thing about yourself……then ask others to post one thing that they really like about you.

3.) Enjoy yourself and have an awesome day!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Here are three things that I like about myself…1) I’ve been told that I have enviable eyebrows (even if I seem to be a bit of a compulsive plucker), 2) I love to smile, especially at kids and pets, but I’m pretty friendly to strangers as well and 3) I will do almost anything for a friend – and if you’re a really good friend, I’m sure that almost line is quite blurry 😉

Well, since all but one of you only know me through this blog only, I can’t expect any deep thoughts here, but hey…anything you might like share about what you might like about me? What about yourself?  Share those likes!

Got a Few Minutes?

A friend of a friend is in a short story competition over on Amazon.  Her first chapter is up for review.  Why not take a minute and read it (14 pages) and drop her a comment?  It’s off to a great start!

Full disclosure:  I’m hoping to get her to blog some of her dating advice for me.  So the more we show her some love, the more she might be inclined to share her expertise over on my site.

How Cool Is This?

The Depression and World War II have always held a bit of fascination with me.  I’m thinking that more than likely it’s because I spent a lot of time around my grandmother and her friends and family.  Some of my fondest memories of her were the times when she and her girlfriends and cousins would all sit around and tell stories from during the War.  Let me just say, they knew how to have fun, even while working hard in the factories.

Imagine my surprise when I saw that the Library of Congress has added some photos from the 30’s and 40’s up on Flickr!  They’re color photos no less.  It’s amazing how pure and clear those images are.  I love looking at photos of women from that era.  The circus photos are pretty cool too – then again, I read Water for Elephants not all that long ago, so this was neat in that it supplied still more photos to go along with that story.

Some of my favorites (though with 1500 or so photos, it will take me a while to get through all of them):

They also have a set up from News in the 1910’s, but for me, that just doesn’t peak my interest as much.
