Unseasonably Cool

Right now, we’re experiencing some unseasonably cool temps here in SoCal. It’s a nice respite from the crazy hot days we’ve been experiencing. So instead of highs in the high 90’s, we’re talking highs in the mid to high 80’s. In fact, right now it’s a mere 73 with a slight breeze. Perfection. Times like this I wish I had a hammock to lay out in while reading a great book and sipping on something great to drink (which reminds me, I’d like to find some recipes for some infused simple syrups). So let’s just say that this girl will not be stuck inside hiding behind the (wimpy) AC. And with the windows actually open, I can hear someone practicing their violin (second time in two days, two separate towns, interesting).

Maybe I should take my camera out today and hit up that old sign storage lot I’ve been eying. Ooh, I need a farmer’s market as well. I was gifted some fresh basil so I’d like to make some panzanella – yum!

Share & Tell: My Desktop Image

I’ll admit it, today is one of those days that I just don’t have anything planned to write about. Of course, I had tons of stuff swarming my brain yesterday, but it was the weekend so I was holding off on posting. And yep, you guessed, now, I can’t for the life of me seem to remember what it might have been.

So instead of rambling (and I can ramble with the best of them), or bore you with the boring details of my day, I’ll leave you with a Share & Tell – both are photos that I took and both are straight out of the camera with no editing…

Apu Must’ve Gone Back to Springfield

It’s August now, so our local Kwik-E-Mart is long gone. I have to say, after a full month of driving by and seeing cars parked everywhere and a line around the building, it’s kind of sad to see just a regular ‘ol 7-Eleven again. It’s a bit of a mess as well – the main storefront is marked up with the sticky stuff from all the signage.

I didn’t have my camera with me today or I’d have taken pictures for some before and after shots. I’m sure by the time I get out that way it’ll be all cleaned up.

Too bad I never did get my Krusty O’s 🙁

Better Late than Never – Thursday Thirteen: Friends & Gratitude

Today is Thursday and that typically means that I should be doing a Thursday Thirteen, but I decided late last night to skip it this week. Instead, I was going to write up a poignant post on friendship. But you know, just now as I started writing this, I figured I’d combine the both. So here we go…thirteen reasons I’m grateful for my friends…

1. filled our freezer with food when my father-in-law (FIL) passed away
2. sent donations to the American Cancer Society in my FIL’s name
3. drove an hour+ to attend my FIL’s funeral, burial and wake, all during a visit with family to be by my side
4. allowed me to live rent-free for a month
5. let me move in with her when I was at a financial low point
6. bought me my favorite WW-friendly, ice cream from Baskin Robbins
7. hosted a full on dinner party for me, my hubby and my two other friends when we were back in Albuquerque visiting
8. passed along baby clothes that they no longer needed so I could pass them on to my sister-in-law since she didn’t have local friends of family to pass things on to her
9. sent me a priority envelop stuffed full of convention freebies and deluxe hotel toiletries (more than once!)
10. snuck home a piece of chocolate cake, squished into a pilfered coffee cup from a work function
11. convinced me to fly to LA and attend a Memorial Day party where I wound up meeting my husband
12. shared a vacation rental (not once, but twice) and opened their home to us – even though some folks may think it’s weird that we’re such good friends with my hubby’s ex
13. were there to support me financially, emotionally, lovingly during any one time or another

I could go on and on, but really, I’m just so grateful for my friends and would do anything for them (and they know it!)

Gotta Love Those Mini Melons!

I am addicted to those Dulcinea watermelons. They’re thin skinned so they’re easy to slice up. They’re virtually seedless (every once and a while a seed or two can be found). They’re the perfect size for just the two of us over a couple of days. The majority of the time they have just the right consistency and sweetness. And well, they’re just perfect. What more could you ask for in a watermelon? Especially when you’re addicted enough that every other day you’re at the store buying a new one? Luckily, they’re only 1 WW point per cup.

And did you know that in Japan they grow their mini watermelons into shapes? Think how much easier it would be to slice up a square watermelon. They actually grow the melons in glass boxes so that the melon will naturally assumed the same shape – and then charge upwards of $80US for them! I hear they do similar silly things with their cucumbers.
