So Much to Do

Ahhh, where to begin.  Well, I guess for starters I can say that I saw Sissy Spacek last night.  Actually, we were heading out to see her daughter at the Hotel Cafe, so it wasn’t a surprise.  Our friend would have introduced us, but we figured as cool as it might be, that it just wasn’t really worth it since she was busy.  So that’s my latest celeb sighting.  We have another show to catch tonight (Grace Potter) out at the Troubadour.  This one the hubster will be shooting.  In which case, I’ll be hanging back in some out of the way corner by the bar like I usually do.

And speaking of the hubs,  he’s working from home these next two days.  While I love having him around, and we really do co-exist pretty well without driving each other crazy, I um, well, never seem to get much done.  Today was the day I’d planned to vacuum up all the crap that got tracked in from that non-stop rain (what a mess!) Now, I can’t do that.  I also still need to rip apart the office since I’m kind of baracaded in at my desk – surrounded by cases of wine, of all things.  And of course, I need to pick up dinner fixin’s – I’m thinking of making a chicken tortilla-ish soup in the ol’ crock.

Plus I still have a slew of stuff to work on for my LWL homework and whatnot.  Oh yeah, I still need to write up this week’s class and write about the Garth show.  Yeah, I’ll get to that.  Meanwhile, I seem to be chilled and achey again.  I wonder what that’s all about.  Maybe it just means that I need more tea!  Off to make another cuppa…

Who Doesn’t Deserve a Cupcake!

Okay, well I’m sure I can think of a few people that might not deserve a cupcake.  But dammit, I just completed one awesome interview with Liza Palmer (http://lizapalmer.com  – my links are working with me today) and lo’ and behold, there was a cupcake shop right next door.  And really, who doesn’t deserve a cupcake, right?  So mocha it was – and I washed it down with a sugar-free, non-fat caramel macchiato…yum!  What a great day so far!

Some other cool things…1) author extraordinaire, Liza gave me tons of info for reaching out to publicists.  Hopefully I can get some other author interviews lined up.  Mind you,they won’t exactly have the ease of in person, so I’ll surely have to get much better at my interviewing skills.  But I’m up for it!  So we’ll be adding that to my list of things to do this week. And 2) I’m getting some responses to my request for bloggers and experts for my site’s blog.  I just love when the universe works it’s magic!

What I learned today…

1) I’m apparently a lousy excuse for a California gal – let’s keep in mind that I’m far from being a native!

2) Not a fan of the artichoke – even when I’m promised by the waitress that theirs is the absolute best and will spoil me for all others.

3) The oh.my.god that is Sees chocolates is kind of lost on me.  I just thought it was just your basic chocolate.  But apparently, it has some sort of cult following and both Liza and our adorable waitress thought I was nuts for not knowing of it’s other worldliness.  Maybe I’ll look into that.

4) I guess I also fail in the key lime department.  I guess it causes shock waves in the atmosphere to not want key lime pie.  Who knew?  I was fine with the brownie thing though (and then of course on top of that, the mocha cupcake).

So now I need to edit the interview.  And of course, then have the hubby re-edit the interview.  I hope to have it up some time next week.  Can’t wait!

And did I mention that I have three books to read in two weeks and turn in some sort of review!!  Nothing like having a little deadline. Well, I did say that I wanted something to do during the day.  Thank you Universe!  And now, I’m off to respond to blogging requests and get started on at least one of those books.

*Ack* I’m Feeling a Tad Uninspired

I’m meeting a local author tomorrow in the late morning for an audio interview over coffee.  In the end, she’s someone that I know personally (meet her through Junior League) and she’s a total hoot, so I know it will go well.

But…and there’s always a but…I can’t for the life of me think of any questions to ask her.  I read the book (and loved it!) and I’ve read her other book (and loved it), but really, nothing seems to be coming to me.  While I know the conversation will flow smoothly (or laughingly) I still need to have a bit of an outline to go by.

Doesn’t help that we’ll be sharing a mic.  And let’s keep in mind, the last (and first) time I did an author interview, well, there were mishaps.  We went through the entire interview only to realize that I accidentally muted the recorder and didn’t realize it until it was too late. So needless to say, it took us twice as long to do the interview, but at least it went smoothly and she was a great sport.

So wish me well.  Of course some motivation and burst of creativity and inspiration wouldn’t hurt either 😉

Well I’m Just Little Miss Chit Chat Today

But I’m just so excited…I just emailed off about 15-20 requests to various women in small businesses!  Why, you ask?  Because I’m hoping to find some experts that would be willing to blog about their field, their services or their products in exchange for reaching a mass amount of women reading their words and visiting their sites.  Free advertising for a few words.  Works for me (and I’d sure as hell do it if someone asked – and if I had a product to sell).  I’m also hoping to get some sweepstakes swag so I can get some sweeps going on the site (in hopes of bringing in new members baby!)

See, I’m just all business today.  I also contacted one publisher regarding an email interview I’d like to conduct (she’s out of the office today though) and I still have to write up some interview questions for the author I’m interviewing on Monday.  Otherwise, I just need to sit down and finish my LWL homework for tomorrow’s class.

It has been a busy and yet productive Friday if I do say so myself (too bad I never did get to the bookkeeping stuff – oh well, there’s always next week).

Yikes, the hubs just IM’d saying that he wants to go to a show tonight at the Mint. Must get busy!!!

Seven-Word Wisdom

I was reading about this seven-word wisdom over at the NYT.  Lest you think I actually read the NYT, I followed a biz blog link to the article – trust me, I’m not that wordly. But this blog thing, that’s an entirely different story.

I think it’s a great concept.  Basically, you create 2-3-2 word sequences sharing advice.  What fun, right?  Considering I have to create descriptions for my fellow launchers, I thought this might put me in the right creative frame of mind.

Here are a couple of mine.  Mind you, this kind of speaks to where my head is at (sorta)…

Don’t procrastinate.  Get things done. Much easier.

Think positive. Good things come.  Let go.

Avoid negativity.  Not your shit.  Their perceptions.

 Here are a couple that resonated with me…

Stand up. When you fall. Stand up again.

 Be present. Embrace goodness. Celebrate life.

Share freely. Don’t expect reciprocation. Be surprised.

What seven-word wisdom do you have to share?

Messages From the Great Beyond

 I was catching up on my blogs (and boy howdy do I read a lot of blogs lately – but I’m learning a LOT from it) and came across not one, but two interesting, just-what-I-needed sort of messages.  Leave it to Seth Godin – this guy really is pretty amazing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First a couple days ago I came across this peach of an idea about the shortage of digital coaches.  I really think it could be something I could do and do well.  Hell, I’m always telling someone about SEOs and how useful blogging can be to build a clientele, the best email and other online resources that are available and blah, blah.  And it would be a great match for desire to help women starting out in business and whatnot.  Definitely something to consider…
Here are three things that are true:
1. Digital technology, especially computers and cell phones, can dramatically increase productivity.
2. More and more users of digital technology are small firms or individuals.
3. The vast majority of users of digital technology are totally lame in getting the most out of the investment of their time and money.
Here’s what I haven’t found: people who charge $100 an hour to hear what you do and how you do it and then show you how to do it better. People who organize data and put it in the right place. People who overhaul the way small groups use technology so they can use it dramatically better. More examples: Teach people to back up. Show them how to check their email on the road. Help them understand how to use online networking when it’s appropriate (and warn them when it’s not). Show a restaurant how to use OpenTable to keep the place full, or to use a blog (with an RSS feed) to easily communicate with loyal customers. Teach a company to keep tabs on itself with Technorati.
This is a growth area. The tools are finally in place to market yourself, and even better, the productivity increases you can produce for $500 or $1,000 are not just valuable, they’re actually priceless.
Then yesterday he had this gem of a message for me regarding bad judgement
Try this on: “If I believed what you believe, I’d probably be acting exactly the same way you are right now.” (Better thought than said, probably).
You know what, that’s almost certainly true… if I believed what you said when you wrote that angry blog post*, I probably would have written the same thing.
Once we realize that it’s not a matter of judgment, but a matter of belief, everything changes.
* or whatever random rant can be inserted here
An Irresistible Snack?
Come on Trader Joe’s, is that really what you want your cinnamon almonds to be known as?  I ask because, well, I personally find them to be much more addictive than irresistible.  Considering they get eaten by the handful, I’m fairly certain those 140 calories per serving add on up.  But hey, at least I’m not eating that cupcake I was craving earlier, right?
Comments Schmomments
I always meant to ask this question, you know, back when I had a real blog with real subscriptions and real readers and real comments (it seems so far away now), but I figure I’ll just say fuck it and ask it now because dammit, I just want to know already.  So I ask you, when people leave comments on your blog how do you respond?
First and foremost, I’m pretty bad at responding period.  I eventually get around to it, but it’s usually a couple of days later – though I’m  working on being more timely.  But I wonder, since I never go back to see if anyone has responded to my comments, is responding in the comments directly the best plan?  I know that some folks tend to respond to comments via email.  I think this is kind of cool, but I’m just not sure it’s the best option for me since I tend to clean our my email folders pretty regularly (but I did do it that way when a whole batch of wonderful women commented on my consideration to Incubate with LWL).
Back when I had my (here it comes again) real blog, I used a plug-in so that people had the option to be alerted when comments were left after their comment.  This seemed to work for me as it was up to the reader/commenter to decide whether they wanted be part of a dialog or not so as long as I commented to their comments, I did my part.  Though to be honest, it didn’t seem to necessarily change the frequency of comments come to think of it.
So I ask you, o’few readers, how do you handle your comments and dialog?
Yikes, I’ve Been Tagged
I’ve been tagged by  sufergrrl over at The Ambien Chronicles to reveal a bit more about myself so here goes.  I don’t typically do these meme sorts of things myself, but well, since my blog is still a bit boring, I’ll see what we can come up with.  I won’t be tagging others since I don’t have that many readers (to say nothing of commenters) here yet, but feel free to play along if you’re so inclined.
The rules for this particular game:
-Link to the person who tagged you.
-Post the rules on your blog.
-Share six non-important things/habits/quirks about yourself.
-Tag at least 3 people at the end of your post and link to their blogs.
-Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.
  • I am a seemingly compulsive tweezer.  I can’t seem to walk into the bathroom without examining, tweezing or trimming my brows.  Letting my brows grow out between waxings always killed me (now I’m back to grooming on my own, no more waxing or that God awful threading for me thankyouverymuch).
  • I’m also crazy enough that I keep tweezers with me at all times and have been known to tweeze in dressing rooms (good light for that) or in my car (not while driving, silly).
  • The hubs and I have no plans for kids, but I’d really love to foster or adopt.
  • I have no problems washing or folding clothe, but I absolutely suck at putting the clean clothes away.  Instead, I stack and stack and just pull clothes directly from the stack (much to my husband’s dismay).
  • I enjoy cooking for others, but for some reason, cooking for just the two of us just doesn’t float my boat. Of course, it doesn’t help that the hubs rarely eats the leftovers.
  • I pretty much blog somewhere on a daily basis and have been doing so for the past five or so years now.  This blog is actually my 6th version of a blog – one went from free to hosted and then closed down for various reasons (#1 and #2); one was an LJ that I wrote in regularly but decided to close it down when I felt uncomfortable sharing things with my so-called friends (#3);  one is an LJ that I still use to keep in contact with my local friends (#4); another that I’m essentially editor of, but it’s not quite so fun as blogging just for the hell of it (#5); and lastly, this one (#6).  I miss my hosted blog most of all since I got to pretty it up and add plug-ins and whatnot.  But I figure since I just wanted somewhere, anywhere to blog again, that this would do and I can always just copy all of my posts back into my old hosted account (or something like that).
LWL: Week 2 Homework
Okay, better late then never, right?
Last week’s ongoing homework assignment you might recall was to take notice of forward movement (still more amazing things happening with this), taking time to do nice things for ourselves (this is actually quite easy for me, but surprisingly, some gals in my group had challenges with this), and lastly, to keep cleaning up that junk to allow for more to flow into our life (this I’m still working on).  The big assignment was to write Grand Visions for each other.
I had fun writing these visions for others, but I was a little afraid of how it would go reading and allowing the ones written for me.  I was mostly afraid because I wasn’t sure I presented myself all that well or clearly (since my head was in a strange place).  But really, I should have known it would all work out.  I was thrilled and motivated by the visions that were created for me.
Since receiving my visions I have taken quite a few forward moving steps…first and foremost, finding someone to run my previous business for me; I’ve got an author interview set up for next Monday for my site’s blog; finally wrote a batch of heartfelt thank you’s for my friends that have supported me through some recent stuff; contacted someone regarding their web design (I’m loving that simple, elegant look; and thanks to this week’s homework (outlined below) I’ve got a list of women to contact regarding writing for my site’s blog and products for giveaways.  Overall, not bad movement for a Wednesday!
So for this week’s assignments, we have to do the following:
  • Inform 5 people (strangers, friends, biz relations, etc) about our new launching business – I’ve told a few folk, but I really need to hunker down and throw some intention and purpose behind it.
  • Create a list of 4 needs (can be related to the launch – mine were) and 2 secret weapons to share with our group and answer each and every need for each member – I loved this exercise!  Just actually sitting down and asking for something and getting suggestions and answers instead of just trudging along as is and getting nowhere. Again, just putting it out there has already brought me some returns – I was contacted today by someone that would like to blog for me – yay!
  • Create my elevator speech – you know, that 15 or so second response to “so, what do you do?” I still have to work on mine.  I’m a little stuck though as I’m not sure if I want to focus on my site’s blog (so that can start working on it’s own) or my launch biz so I can start feeling like I’m doing some fulfilling work – well gee, when I put it that way, I guess I’ll be focusing on the launch project 😉  I love that it’s supposed to short, sweet and tot he point…1) I am ___.  2) I do ___  3) for ___ .4) I need ___.  You can’t go wrong with that model to follow.  Here’s what I’ve got “I am LABG and I work with women to help them rediscover joy in their lives.  I need women who want to make changes in their life and live joyfully.”  Okay, that was off the top of my head, it could probably be better, but it’s a start.
  • And lastly, create a description of each person in the group – this piggy-backs on last week’s shared visions a bit.  We can use adjectives, a slogan or zippy saying or whatever creative expression comes our way. I still need to work on this one as well.
I’m sure you can see how this incubator just pumps you up and motivates you each week.  It’s fun.  It’s focused.  And it gives you just the kick you need to get moving and get stuff done.  I really look forward to each session.  I wonder what happens when our four weeks are up??
