The Unexpected Happens

Unexpected / Inesperado

A week or so ago I asked you how many impossible things you’ve been believing each day.  Well, as you know, I’ve been working on those positive thoughts and affirmations.  Opening myself up to the unexpected, I’ve had some pretty amazing things come into my life…both unexpected and quite wonderful.

  • An old boss co-worker ex-boyrfriend friend that I haven’t heard from in about 20 years just contacted me through Facebook the other night.  While I’ve been connecting with quite a few friends and co-workers from my past, this was one of those rare, unexpected and wonderful lost connections that I’m so happy to have found again (right up there with finding my college roomie after all these years).
  • I’ve had three clients contact me out of the blue.  I haven’t even been focusing on attracting any new clients.  So a very pleasant and welcome surprise.
  • I was contacted out of the blue to host yet another name-brand contest on my site (it will go live in early March) which conveniently fills a space that I was going to have to look to fill come Monday.
  • I realized that once I start looking to approach companies for sponsorship, I have one helluva history/client-base that I can point back to and killer demographics.  This is going to be fun!
  • I already mentioned the misplaced business founds that were reimbursed by the bank a week or so ago.
  • Today while shredding papers, I found $3!  Granted, it’s not $3000, but it’s still $3 that I didn’t have before and it was still very unexpected and very much appreciated.

It’s amazing what can enter into you life when you open yourself up to the unexpected.  While it might not seem like all too much, it shows that the Universe is listening and we’re co-creating.  Either way, I’m grateful, tickled and excited…and that’s what matters here.

So I ask…What wonderful and unexpected things can you welcome into your life? And again, what seemingly impossible thing have you believed today?

Nothing Beats LA After it Rains

The smog is washed away and it’s clear enough you see the entire city…

You can get an clear shot of the Hollywood Sign…

So of course we had to head into Hollywood Land to get even closer to the sign…

You can even see all the way to the ocean (that reflection just above the mountains)…

So we headed out to the ocean and ended up in Marina del Rey…

And watched the sailboats…

Such a blue, blue sky…

The rains were starting again in Culver City which gave us a teeny tiny rainbow in Mid City (just to the right of the bulb itself)…

And then the rain starts all over again and we started heading back home…

What the Hell, it’s February Already?

The longest

Where did January go?  Maybe it would seem a bit more like February if we actually had had some cooler January temperatures.  Seriously, 80 degrees in January?!?!  There’s just something seriously wrong with that.  Especially when the rest of the country is dealing with crazy cold temperatures, snow and ice.

Well, I guess I just need to suck it up and welcome dear February.  The good thing about new months, is that it gives you permission to try something new.

Thanks to my bloggie friend and fellow Masterminder, Sarah (otherwise known as  Mar Vista Mom),  I have decided that for the entire month of February (give or take a day or two) I’ll be spending all my time and energy working on my website…not my personal blog, not my business blog or consulting clients, but on my community, its blog and the various ongoing contests.

This is big for me.  For the first time in a long time I feel more in control of things.  For so long now I’d been feeling like I was being pulled in too many different directions and I was never sure what I should be focusing on.  Sarah suggested that I allot a certain amount of time (be it days or weeks, or a particular day of the week, or week of the month, or whatever) and focus exclusively on one thing at a time.  If something pops up – and I’m sure it will since I’ll be doing my best to ignore whatever I’m not working on – I’ll write it down and get to it later.

This is perfect for me.  Why couldn’t I see this myself and figure it out?  Probably because I was too caught up in what seemed to be massive feelings of overwhelm (with possibly a hint of fear thrown in for good avoidance).  This my friends is why you need a good network of friends!

Of course, it means I’ll need to still created at least 4 posts for my business blog since I don’t want that to sit dormant for too long.  But I can do that.  In fact, my goal for today is to address the specific things that aren’t related to the site such as our taxes, phone calls, and those previously mentioned blog posts.

Here’s hoping it all works out the way I’m hoping for.  Wish me luck!

So what have you been avoiding that you could spend some time focusing on this month?

Uh Oh, I Just Spent $100 on New Lipsticks

lipstick
Yes, you read that right…$100 on new lipsticks (plural, more than one).

As you may or may not have heard (if you follow me on Twitter you’ll likely have heard), I just found out last week that my favorite, go to lipstick has been discontinued.  I’ve always heard about those ladies that freak out when their favorite whatever gets discontinued, but I’ve always been one to freak as I’ve found .  Up until now, that is.

This loss is about ready to do me in.  My favorite color, Clinique‘s Almost Lipstick, in Black Plum is the perfect shade for me.  It doesn’t scream “I’m wearing lipstick” instead it’s a totally, naturally flattering color. It’s also an almost lipstick, so it’s more sheer than a regular lipstick, but not as goopy or shiny as a gloss with the right about of last to it.  Perfection, I tell you, perfection.

Of course, they discontinued it because according to them, Black Honey flatters everyone so there’s no longer any need to carry any other color.  So not true and companies need to stop thinking that one color can flatter everyone.  I can’t wear Nars‘ Orgasim and I can’t wear Clinque’s Black Honey no matter how many makeup aficionados, counter girls, or magazines might try to convince me.  Put it on and you’ll see, they do nothing for me and just look garish.

But I digress.

So, I was able to call the Estee Lauder Lost But Not Forgotten line to see if they can track down some of my magical lipsticks, but until then, I figured I had to do something.  First up, I head to Ulta to see what they had…not much, but I did see a Stila lipstick line I was interested so I placed an order with Sephora.com.  Of course, I wanted the darker, more plumier of the two, but I guess that one was no longer available.

I ended up with Anna.  It’s a nice enough color, though it really could use a tad more plum.  It’s a little sheer, though the consistency is more of a lipstick than a sheer.  The staying power is pretty good though.

Next up, I head over to the Bobbie Brown counter as I hear that they have a new line of sheers.  Yeah, in a whopping four colors only!  Total disappointment.  Then again, I forgot just how subtle their palette tends to be, so they really didn’t have anything anyway.

From there I wander over to MAC.  I stopped using MAC as a whole a few years ago when 1) the salespeople were so obnoxious that I could never get anyone to wait on me and 2) I realized the foundation that I  loved so much because it covered my zits was in fact, causing more zits.  The saleslady today was actually quite helpful.  Turns out they do have a sheer line as well, but nothing in my color range – what’s with all these unnaturally pale colors?  We did find a Lustre in Desire that looks workable.  I picked it up along with my a backup of my favorite kohl eyeliner in Teddy.

Lastly, I headed over to Sephora and decided to play around a bit.  I needed to pick up a new Boscia Jujube Salve Stick anyway and hoped that I might be able to snag one for their goody bags that I missed out on with my mailorder.  While they were of course, out of the goody bags, the sales gal did hook me up with some samples, so that was nice.  And in the process, I think I just might have found my new sheer lip color.

Drumroll please….

Dior Addict High Shine in Front Row Fig!  It’s a great, barely there color that I can apply without a mirror.  It’s moisturizing and has a bit of a shine, but it isn’t goopy.  I think it just might be The One. Of course, I’m still holding out for those three backup sticks I ordered from Lost But Not Forgotten.  But this could truly be their replacement if need be.

Ladies, I gotta ask…how do you do it?  How do you survive when your favorite color (of anything) just disappears like that?

It’s expensive work.  And of course, the hubs and I just put all our credit cards and accounts online through Mint.com (a very cool site), and now every time a purchase is made (and in particular if you go over budget) it shoots out an email or text.  He’s now going to KNOW that I just spent $100 in lipsticks!!!! And another $45 in yoga pants at Old Navy. 😐 I guess the good news is that I can return whatever doesn’t work.

I Love My Network

On the other side of the sea...

I have the greatest bunch of friends.  More importantly, I have a great bunch of friends that are also solopreneurs and run businesses of their own.  This means that if I ever need to bounce business ideas or challenges off someone, I have a great team to do that with.

I’m so thankful for the fact that I know, without a doubt that I’m never alone.  This is something that I wish for anyone, whether you own  a business or what.  May you always have a team to support you in whatever you do.

Today I met one of my friends for lunch.  There was a lot of catching up since it had been nearly two months since we’d last talked (brief emails and text messages on NYE don’t count).  I loved hearing where she was in her business and what she was focusing on for this year.

It was great to be able to share in her successes and support her when she needed it. I think she’s going to do some amazing things this year and I can’t wait to share that with her as well.

I also really enjoyed being able to share what I’m going through right now (this feeling of being pulled in different directions and not knowing what to focus on) and getting her input.  I think, through her insight, I finally get it.

I really feel like I know what I need to do now.  I can finally stop avoiding setting some goals and gaining some focus.  Sadly, I seem to be so quick to play the part of the ostrich and stick my head in the sand waiting for something to come to me.  And to top it all off, I’m excited again.  This is most definitely a good thing.

So if you’ve got something that’s been bugging you, take a moment and ask your friends for their input.  Ask for help if you need to.  Stop fighting it and just open yourself up to receive.  You never know what might come of it.

So what’s been bugging you or keeping you up at night?  What would you like to share?

It’s a New Year, It’s a New Day: ’bout Time I Post Something Already

New Day, New Year, New Beginings: Let's Have a...

Well happy two days after new year to all of you!  I hope your NYE was all that you’d hoped it would be.  We were pretty mellow and enjoyed a fine prime rib dinner with a friend and then drove around the Rose Bowl Parade route to laugh at those crazies that camp out (while avoiding getting hit by flying marshmellows and tortillas a’la shaving cream.  We were back home in time for some lovely snacks and some champagne before it officially became ’09.  Oh and we were lucky enough to catch some of the floats as they were arriving to settle in for the night (they’re in my Facebook photo album as they were blackberry images).

I’ll admit it, I haven’t been around all too much lately.  I’ve been taking care of some year end business and well, just been enjoying the holiday season without feeling the need to post much.  I’ve been all over Twitter and Facebook though if you don’t yet follow me there. Oh and speaking of Facebook, I did it, I finally found and contacted someone out of my past…someone from elementary school in fact.  It was kind of fun – especially checking out her photo albums.  I just might have to add a few other former classmates.  The odd thing, while I was poking around my old schools’ (yes, I went to two high schools) FB rosters, I realized that while I recognized so many names, I couldn’t necessarily remember a face, a personality or well, the person attached to the name.  Guess I don’t remember all too much about my childhood after all.

I’m wondering, does anyone else take a moment to look back over the past year before it officially ends?  I spent some time last week looking over my business accomplishments.  While I might not have made oodles of bank last year, I still think that I’ve accomplished quite a bit.  I also took a moment to send out a couple personal notes to people that I’ve met throughout the year that have helped me with my business (crap, I just now realized that I forgot one important person…BRB…okay, that’s done *whew*).  I think my favorite year-end task was writing a quick letter to my long distance friends (that for some reason or another I rarely talk to throughout the year) and doing a “what a year it’s been” update.  Lots of fun to linger over the memories and photos – especially since I was able to visit with so many of my long distance friends in ’08.  It’s been a good year with so much to be grateful for..gotta love that!

So now it’s time to look forward and focus on the amazing 2009!  Which of course starts with tasks…*sigh*.  Oh well, I’ll willingly clean up the apartment and especially my office knowing that doing so creates a shift in energy to bring forth new and amazing things.  Can’t say I’m so willing to embrace moving the Christmas boxes back out to the garage (though it will be quite nice to see them GONE!) or to do the piles of laundry that seem to have developed over the days (how does that happen??)  But I think my favorite task to do this week (what’s left of this week) is to sit down and set some intentions for how I want 2009 to play out and set some goals to go along with those intentions.  I’m honestly so excited for the many wonderful things that are going to come along this year.

So what about you, what are some of your year-end and new year rituals? Do you both to create resolutions or do you set up goals and intentions or something else?  Do you clean, organize, store away?  Tell me!!

As 2008 quickly turns to 2009, I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you (those I’ve had the pleasure to get to know and those who’ve yet to say ‘hello’) for following along on my personal journey…the highs, the lows and the what the hells.

I wish for you an amazing 2009. May it bring you much love, much joy, much prosperity and many, many successes!

Behind the Scenes at KLEAN

I was practicing the fine of of Thanksgiving today – you know, where you GIVE and the recipient says THANKS? Well, I thought it would be fun to take a brief (ha!) procrastinatory (yeah, I make up my own words, what of it?) break and head on over to the KLEAN Bath & Body headquarters to visit with their CEO and VIP, Jennifer. Nothing like enjoying a CBTL tea latte amongst friends.

So while I was there visiting, I just had to take a peek at all those holiday orders. Lo’ and behold, my bloggie friend Carrie of Sommer Designs (her blog) had placed and order and Jennifer was filling it. So I just had to get a photo of the behind-the-scene action. The best part, the whole licking-the-bowl experience…no licking, but got to slather on the leftover lavender lotion.

Better still, I was lucky enough to leave with some hand lotion and body polish.  What a deal – More giving and more thanks!
