I Feel Even More Fashion Challenged Than Before

I had my first virtual styling session yesterday. It was pretty cool. First I had to send over the photos I mentioned the other day. Then we had to open a Skype video chat. Messing with the lighting was a little tough, but I think I got it right.

Thing is, I really do feel more fashion challenged than when I went in. When I started, I was under the assumption that I was doing it all wrong and had totally NO sense of style. Yet I was complemented on my photos and my overall “casual” style across the pictures. I was even told that I looked better than I had the last time we saw each other (which translated to that last outfit as having been horribly unflattering). Not exactly what I was expecting.

I was also told that Ill be needing some new shoes (she hated ALL my shoes with the exception of my casual, non-sneaker, Privos – I think just because they’re not actually sneakers) and basically all of my purses. I was actually told that I’m too young (and too sassy and funny) for the Coach bag look. So I guess I’ll be heading out for a new purse after all.

There’s still much more ahead. Purging, dying, cutting, and shopping, oh my! But I think my end assignment will be to learn how to take my “casual” wardrobe and step it up a notch. You know, get more comfortable wearing dresses and makeup on an every day sort of scale. I need to learn how to get dressed using my entire closet, not just a portion of my closet. Not really having an “I-can’t-wear-this-I-just-work-from-home” category, so to speak.

I’m not so sure I’m ready for all of this. Let me just say, it’s all some scary shit if you ask me.

It’s Official, I Have NO Style

A friend of mine is in the process of taking her personal styling biz virtual.  She put out the call asking for people willing to be a “type.”  I volunteered for the plus-size gal that works from home, but still needs to look good when she’s out and about with people either networking, training or teaching.

Easy peasy, right? One would think.

I needed to provide four looks for her: schlep-wear, casual wear, business wear and something dressier.  Schlep-wear will be easy considering this is my every day attire – I’m sure Oprah would be mortified.  I actually didn’t take this one yet since my favorite yoga pants are still drying.  I plan to break the no-gym-wear-out-of-the-gym rule and wear them for the drive today (since it’s six hours in the car with a dog on my lap).

Thing is, I realized that when you come down to it, I seem to have have no real sense of style.  I consider the dress I wore yesterday for my first day of teaching (sans the cami to cover the cleavage) – also the dress I wore to my husband’s birthday dinner and out to a bar for the Carl’s Jr. launch party to be my “dressy” outfit.  Um…dinner, teaching, happy hour and I consider it dressy?  Well, not go to a wedding dressy (that’s a once a year sort of dress) or black tie dressy (I have nothing for that), but well, dressy by my paltry standards.  But really, even I know that’s just wrong.

Then, the worse part, I tried on a couple different outfits that I’ve worn for networking, dinners out, hanging with friends and even teaching workshops and well, I looked the same in all of them.  Like no difference kind of the same.  Which means my casual and my business casual are pretty much identical.

How can this be?  How can every outfit look the same?  How could I have lost such touch with reality?  Well, I guess working from home for 5 or so years can do that to a gal.  It may be embarrassing to admit, but with the help of my stylist, I too can get some style (and help someother poor plus-sized, work from home soul out there to get some help as well).

It’s All About ME ME ME!!!

Not exactly. I mean it is my husband’s birthday. But I did something totally uncharacteristic today…I left him before he even got out of bed telling him that there was a bagel waiting for him. You see, I had to head out to the college to get my employment papers filed since classes start next week.

From there I thought I’d head to Target to try on an adorable dress I was eying over the weekend. I figured if it was flattering, I’d wear it to his birthday dinner tonight (see, it can still be about him – LOL) and then for teaching. It’s a little nerve wracking not being able to wear jeans (or flipflops) when that’s what we tend to live in here in LA.

Anyway, I actually picked up two dresses. The one one I was eying and a cute sundress of sorts (which of course isn’t up online yet). Again, both will work for teaching and my professional meetings or networking events. Totally worth it, right? They actually had quite a few cute dresses and I’ve been having much better luck with their stuff than with the Old Navy plus line.

I hate to say, I totally forgot that teaching at the college would also mean that I’m college faculty. Hello! How swanky does that sound? Not only does it sound swanky, but it means I get to have a faculty ID card. And while that might not get me movie discounts, it gets me TONS of other discounts – like on electronics, programs, books and whatnot. Can’t wait to get my new audio recorder at nearly half the standard rate!

Totally makes the (seemingly) minimal (3 hr/wk) salary worth it for the perks alone!

I Feel the Siren Song of the New Purse Calling to Me

Again.

And once again, I’m going to need to just ignore it.  We’re even closer to our anniversary and now it’s looking like even that could change (a possible earlier trip to Vegas instead).

I should be fine though.  I just bought this gorgeous Le Sportsac (as if you might need further proof that I’m a child of the 80’s) computer bag.  I’ll be able to use it all the time when I meet with clients.  Up until now, I was just using a neoprene sleeve and a cheesy bag I got from Ellen in the Park a couple years back.  But you know, it will be just perfect for that teaching job.  You know, once the call me to confirm that I should actually show up next Tuesday.

It’s tough though, all the cute spring bags are out.  And as insane as it is…I love me a white purse.  Come on, nothing says spring like white leather!  I mean, look how cute this one is…

I just keep telling myself that my birthday is in just 6 weeks and I can surely hold out for a cute new purse until then.  I can, right?  I mean, six weeks isn’t that long.  Is it?

The Shopping Moratorium Has Ended

Well, not really.  But kinda.  Once we realized that the fraudulent charges were dropped, it eased things up a bit.  Not that I’m going to head out to pick up that new $300 purse (heck, I’m turning down a trip to the outlets this weekend), but I have done a little shopping.

Since I haven’t had much luck finding dresses, I picked up a pair of black slacks yesterday at Kohl’s.  Of course, they were on sale, not crazy discounted, just on sale. They’ll do nicely though…once I find a pair of casual, but comfortable heels, that is.

Then today I was reminded that the hubs needs new jeans. In the past couple of months, he’s had to retire about three pairs of his jeans due to rips in the legs (so odd, that all three had the same rip in the same spot).  Silly me, I never did get around to replacing them.  Of course, once we ready a certain point (hello laundry day I’m talking about you!) we remember about the need to replace those retired, holey jeans.  So off to Penny’s I went.

I didn’t have much luck (plus I was confused as to which size since he has two different sizes he’s been wearing). I picked up one pair in each size, but since they weren’t the same brand, only one was on sale and the other full price. I’m thinking that once he gets home and confirms the sizes, I’m just going to do an online order somewhere.

While I was at Penny’s I checked out the sale racks for myself.  Wow, they’ve got some crazy markdowns going on.  I picked up a cute wrap sweater in black (will be great for travel and summer concerts), a pair of black pigmented dressy jeans (you know, not black jeans, but black trouser-jeans), and a long-sleeve, faux-wrap shirt.  Great stuff for oh, less than $10 each (except the sweater, that was only half price).  Those jeans were originally $50 and I got them for $8.97!  Score!

I also headed back to Sephora to return that Stila lipstick I bought as part of the Great Lipstick Hunt ’09 and a couple of other things I recently bought but realized I didn’t need.  I don’t know about you, but I enjoy un-shopping as much as shopping sometimes.  I did pick up this cute Eco Eyes set from Tarte – I figured with what I returning, it was only about $20 for about $109 worth of product.  Another score, right? Plus it came with a full-size mascara and well, we know that I’m still in the middle of the Great Mascara Hunt ’09.  And to be honest, I think that eyelash curler works better than my coveted Shu Uemura which has really been letting me down lately. I wonder if this one will trigger my luggage getting searched (I only seem to get searched when I bring my  lash curler with me).

So when I order the hubs some jeans tonight, I might also order myself a dress or two (there are a couple I’ve been eying on Old Navy clearance).  But then I just need to stop.  After all, there’s that 5th anniversary- 40th birthday trip we’re saving for in May! 😉

I’m Feeling the Urge to Shop

Did you ever notice that when you really need to save money, or be on some sort of budget, that’s when the shopping urge comes to town?  I’m not a crazy shopaholic (despite what my recent lipstick purchases might otherwise suggest).  I work from home, so I don’t often shop for new clothes or shoes.  I think I typically spend my money on books and smelly body products if I spend it on anything.

But now, tell me that I can’t spend any money or put me on a budget of sorts and blamo, I want to spend a small fortune on things. I’m feeling the pull of online shopping!!  The power is weak in this one.

Right now I’m coveting dresses of all things.  I rarely wear dresses (or get that dressed up), but I joined a networking group where the ladies tend to get all dressed up.  So of course, I think I now need to buy dresses (logic, I tell ya).

I’m also on a bit of a mascara kick.  I’ve decided that I don’t wear make up often enough to warrant spending the big bucks on high end mascara.  So I’ve been testing out all the drugstore versions to see if I can find a favorite (I’ll blog about it once I try a couple more).  Of course, by now I’ve spent enough that I could have bought that Lancome Definicils already.  But that’s not really the point here.

I’m also considering some new shoes and a new purse.  Thank you Coach for that 25% off coupon that I don’t intend to use.  Luckily, I know better than to spend $300+ just because I want a new purse.  I most certainly don’t need a new purse.  In fact, if truth be told, I’d much rather save that money and apply it to a 5th anniversary trip in May.  But that still doesn’t get rid of this urge to shop.

So what’s a gal to do, pick up something small, but fun (like I need yet another lipstick) to curb the urge?  Or do I just hold strong and avoid all stores at all costs? Or should I just consider tonight’s splurgey Girls Night Out (nice dinner and a movie) as my spend for the week?

What do you buy when you feel the urge to spend?  What are you coveting right now – will you give in and get it or just covet from afar?

What Would You Like for Valentine’s Day?

Heart

Buying gifts for the various holidays and birthdays just isn’t very big in our house.  Even when I do ask for a gift, it’s typically something housewares-y or domestic (which is hear is all wrong).  I’m planning on creating a shopping guide  (you have no idea how much I adore checking out shopping guides) just for this Valentine’s day for my site and our newsletter.

So I ask for your input…what would you like for Valentine’s Day? Chocolate, jewelry, perfume, a new lipstick, a special book, what?  I’m open to any and all suggestions.

Uh Oh, I Just Spent $100 on New Lipsticks

lipstick
Yes, you read that right…$100 on new lipsticks (plural, more than one).

As you may or may not have heard (if you follow me on Twitter you’ll likely have heard), I just found out last week that my favorite, go to lipstick has been discontinued.  I’ve always heard about those ladies that freak out when their favorite whatever gets discontinued, but I’ve always been one to freak as I’ve found .  Up until now, that is.

This loss is about ready to do me in.  My favorite color, Clinique‘s Almost Lipstick, in Black Plum is the perfect shade for me.  It doesn’t scream “I’m wearing lipstick” instead it’s a totally, naturally flattering color. It’s also an almost lipstick, so it’s more sheer than a regular lipstick, but not as goopy or shiny as a gloss with the right about of last to it.  Perfection, I tell you, perfection.

Of course, they discontinued it because according to them, Black Honey flatters everyone so there’s no longer any need to carry any other color.  So not true and companies need to stop thinking that one color can flatter everyone.  I can’t wear Nars‘ Orgasim and I can’t wear Clinque’s Black Honey no matter how many makeup aficionados, counter girls, or magazines might try to convince me.  Put it on and you’ll see, they do nothing for me and just look garish.

But I digress.

So, I was able to call the Estee Lauder Lost But Not Forgotten line to see if they can track down some of my magical lipsticks, but until then, I figured I had to do something.  First up, I head to Ulta to see what they had…not much, but I did see a Stila lipstick line I was interested so I placed an order with Sephora.com.  Of course, I wanted the darker, more plumier of the two, but I guess that one was no longer available.

I ended up with Anna.  It’s a nice enough color, though it really could use a tad more plum.  It’s a little sheer, though the consistency is more of a lipstick than a sheer.  The staying power is pretty good though.

Next up, I head over to the Bobbie Brown counter as I hear that they have a new line of sheers.  Yeah, in a whopping four colors only!  Total disappointment.  Then again, I forgot just how subtle their palette tends to be, so they really didn’t have anything anyway.

From there I wander over to MAC.  I stopped using MAC as a whole a few years ago when 1) the salespeople were so obnoxious that I could never get anyone to wait on me and 2) I realized the foundation that I  loved so much because it covered my zits was in fact, causing more zits.  The saleslady today was actually quite helpful.  Turns out they do have a sheer line as well, but nothing in my color range – what’s with all these unnaturally pale colors?  We did find a Lustre in Desire that looks workable.  I picked it up along with my a backup of my favorite kohl eyeliner in Teddy.

Lastly, I headed over to Sephora and decided to play around a bit.  I needed to pick up a new Boscia Jujube Salve Stick anyway and hoped that I might be able to snag one for their goody bags that I missed out on with my mailorder.  While they were of course, out of the goody bags, the sales gal did hook me up with some samples, so that was nice.  And in the process, I think I just might have found my new sheer lip color.

Drumroll please….

Dior Addict High Shine in Front Row Fig!  It’s a great, barely there color that I can apply without a mirror.  It’s moisturizing and has a bit of a shine, but it isn’t goopy.  I think it just might be The One. Of course, I’m still holding out for those three backup sticks I ordered from Lost But Not Forgotten.  But this could truly be their replacement if need be.

Ladies, I gotta ask…how do you do it?  How do you survive when your favorite color (of anything) just disappears like that?

It’s expensive work.  And of course, the hubs and I just put all our credit cards and accounts online through Mint.com (a very cool site), and now every time a purchase is made (and in particular if you go over budget) it shoots out an email or text.  He’s now going to KNOW that I just spent $100 in lipsticks!!!! And another $45 in yoga pants at Old Navy. 😐 I guess the good news is that I can return whatever doesn’t work.

Looking for GPS Navigation System Advice

After our fiasco of driving around Dublin totally and completely lost, while our friends went here, there and everywhere without once getting lost using their GPS unit, we’ve decided to take the plunge.  I’m thinking that Black Friday sales will bring me the best deal.  But not knowing much about one brand vs another brand, I’m asking for advice.

So what brand and model do you have?  What do you like about it?  What don’t you like about it?  Do you use a Mac?

We’re leaning towards either  a TomTom (though it seems it’s not 100% Mac-compatible and no word when or if it will be remedied any time soon) or a Garmin Nuvi (which we know is Mac-compatible since it’s what our friends that we hung out with in Dublin used).

Any input is greatly appreciated.

What a Gift Giving Score!!

Headed out to Kohl’s earlier today – they’re having a “power shopping sale” with “2 days of our most powerful prices.”  I had a few gifts to pick up – family birthdays to be celebrated over Thanksgiving, baby shower, and friend’s birthday – so I figured I’d check out this powerful sale.

Man, total score.  Seriously, the entire store was on sale.  I managed to pick up three out of the four family birthday gifts, the baby shower gifts, three Christmas gifts, some Christmas decorations (needed a new wreath for the door) and something pretty for myself.  All of that was only $166.  While that might sound a bit pricey, I believe it was all a 30 – 55% off.  Total score and well worth the drive.

At this rate, I believe that I have most of my holiday shopping done.  All that really remains are the nephew gifts (have the neices already – thank you Will.I.Am and Grammy swag!) and the adult family member whose name I pick.  Add to that a couple of small friend gifts for my long distance friends and I’m done.

Believe it or not, times like this I actually miss working retail.
