Well, this was totally disappointing…it didn’t even post the photo.  Grrrr!

Take II: I so want this…

it’s a reusable, cloth garment bag to be used at the dry cleaners.  Considering I launder the hub’s shirts at the dry cleaners every other week, this would really cut down on a lot of plastic bags.

Now if Delight only had a way to create a wish list, this would so be on my list for my birthday.  Yes, it’s that darn cool!

Lovin’ the Pepsi Retro Style

old_school_pepsiI just love when I open to door to get the mail or let out the dog and have a surprise sitting there waiting for me.  And today, that surprise was this old school Pepsi lunch box and a sample of both their Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwbacks.

So what is a Pepsi or Mountain Dew Throwback, you ask?

It’s that retro look and taste that hearkens back to life in 60’s and 70’s (man, now I feel old!)  Both products are sweetened with natural sugar.  You know, just like you used to remember.

Although I honestly, can’t say that I actually remember what soda used to taste like before the corn syrup got a hold of things (having just finished the Omnivore’s Dilemma, I’m so more aware of this corn syrup thing than ever before).  Lucky for me though, once I moved to NM and later SoCal, I was lucky enough to be able to occasionally purchase both Coke and Pepsi products that were imported from Mexico and sweetened with cane sugar.  Man, now that’s some good stuff.

What a difference the natural sugar makes.  I mean, it just tastes simpler.  Smoother.  Yummier.

Now for a short time, through to the end of June, the Throwback sodas (I have such an urge to call them “pop” and I have never in my life used that term) will be available in select markets.

Moral of the story, drink these babies while you can.  They can’t be expected to keep the 60’s and 70’s around forever now, can they?  It’s not like this is fashion we’re talking about 😉

I Can Not Believe it’s This Hot Already!

temps

It’s not even May.  No wonder I was so damn lethargic today.

Right now, it’s hotter inside my apartment (88.9) than it is outside.  According to my thermometer it’s 85.3 in the front and 88 in our bedroom and that’s just nuts!  According to my Apple widget, it was 100 today.

100 degrees!  In April! This is almost as bad as those 90 degree days we had in January.

And dingalinga, let’s conserve energy me decided not to bother to turn on the AC.  I kept telling myself that it wasn’t hot, it was just warm and as long as I had a fan, I’d be fine.

Hell no, that wasn’t so! Tomorrow, the wimpy AC is on while I’m home the entire time.  I can’t get anything done when it’s damn near 90 inside.

And to think, I told my personal stylist (that I had to drop because I just got too busy with clients) that it would be too hot to remove all the clothes from my closet, try things on and off for an hour and then have to put everything away.  I think she thinks I was making the stiffling heat thing up and just using it as an excuse.  Nope.  I speak the truth! 😉  I am bummed that I had to stop working with her just when we were getting started though.

Welcome to the Ultimate Blogging Party

A little late than never, but I thought it would be easier to make this post a sticky…so consider things stuck! Daily (or so) posts follow below.

Ultimate Blog Party 2009

Holy cow, I can’t believe that I posted about the Ultimate Blog Party 2009 about a month ago and I still manage to forget to sign up and post!  Please forgive me.  I will have to take some time and get a real, welcomey sort of post up here.  Right now, I just have to post my hasty hello! and run.

Here are the basics (will tweak more later, after I get back from dinner)…

  • thirty-something blogger far too close to becoming a forty-something blogger
  • run a small business leading workshops and teaching small business the benefits of social media and blogging
  • also run an amazing community and blogsite that hosts regular weekly giveaways (and why I don’t have one up here)
  • have another business that I plan to be getting started over the next couple months, but am still a little hushhush about it
  • I’m not a fan of the term “mompreneur” as I feel it separates us as women and think that we’d do better to support each other in business as much as possible – while I’ll agree that moms have an additional challenge or two than others may not have, but it doesn’t mean that a child-free entrepreneur doesn’t also have additional challenges to face (during my first years in business, like many, I worked full time, but at one point, I also took full time care of my father-in-law as he lost his battle with cancer — different challenges, but still difficult challenges for a young business none-the-less).  Basically, I’m just not a fan of pitting women against women, I think that unfortunately we can do that ourselves without the media getting involved and categorizing us.
  • I’ve been blogging on and off for about 5 or so years now in fact, I write on three blogs
  • I attended BlogHer last year, but won’t be this year
  • love my crazy, workaholic husband who is currently at SXSW doing his music-lovin’ thing (our 5th anniversary is right around the corner)
  • we’re child-free, but have two adorable little fur-kids (much as I might hate that expression) – one cat that’s been waking me up too damn early this past week and one dog that never seems to stop barking
  • when the mood strikes me, I can curse like a sailor (and why I’m in the not-so-family-friendly category)
  • I love taking photos and sometimes participate in Wordless Wednesday  – can’t stand editing though, so I tend to post my images raw, straight outta the camera
  • I love in the greater Los Angeles area (moved her to marry my husband) and miss seasons (and winter particularly) tremendously
  • I’m a Jersey Girl born and bred, though I moved southward when I was 20 or so – I still have the accent on occasion, but will either need to be drunk or very excited (doesn’t mean the occasional “shoew-oar” (sure) won’t slip out – and yes, it cracks my husband, the native Angelino up)
  • I love nothing more than a great cup of tea, though when out and about, I live on lattes or iced coffees
  • that’s all I can think of right now, but I do have this 7 Things post that might share a couple of insights
  • Edited to Add: just realized that while I’m too exhausted to create a more witty post, I can just link you to last year’s post and that should give you an idea of what I’m about

Oh yeah, I may as well write this here since I know it’s getting the page views…I’m always looking for bloggers on my site.  If you’re interested in learning more about the opportunity, drop me a note.

Proper welcome to come okay, that’s not happening now, but I have been adding more and more to this post each day. Please feel free to stay and visit a while….

And did I mention that there are prizes involved?  Me, I’m most interested in the following:

  • #58 – Kitchaid Mixer
  • #19, #21 and #22 – all $50 Target gift certificates
  • #111 Afternoon Tea in a Box (I do love me some tea)
  • and lastly #12 a $20 gift certificate to The Gift Closet

What prizes are you interested in?

Barbie Turns 50 And She’s Having a Party!

Word has it that this video was on Jay Leno earlier this week. Of course, I missed it. But when it was sent to me, I knew I had to share it. She seems so Real Housewives of Orange County and a little less Malibu these days. You go girl!

Happy Birthday Barbie!!

Of course, now I’m really curious about that real life Malibu Dream House that Jonathan Adler has been decorating for her big day.

Twitter Can Be an Amazing Tool

I know for many, when it comes to Twitter, you etiher get it, or you don’t.  I’m fine with that.  In fact, many people can say the same for blogging, they either get it or they just don’t get it.  I have to say though, I think Twitter can not only be fun and good for business, but it can be one amazing tool.

  • First, you can sometimes meet some really cool people, that much like with blogging, can later become good friends.
  • You can get answers to basic questions like what to make for dinner or more newsworthy topics like double-checking that it was indeed an earthquake that just took place (I speak from personal experience here).
  • You can get product assistance with tools or software that you’ve purchased (@wordpress, @evernote, @quickbooks, @apple_news, @BlackBerry, @tivo and so, so much more).
  • You can network in your jammies all around the world on any topic from hobbies to brand loyalty to business.
  • You can actually speak to someone in customer service (@comcastcares, @dell, @starbucks, @thecoffeebean, @zappos, @dishnetwork, @jetblue, @sweetleaf and the list goes on).
  • You can get up to the moment news (@cnn, @cnnbrk, @msnbc, @foxnews, @ABCnews, @latimes, @bbcnews and yes, pretty much every local news network is on Twitter now as well as local police and fire departments like @LAFD).
  • You can rub elbows with the rich & famous (@jimmyfallon, @marthastewart, @britneyspears, @tonyrobbins, @sirdickbranson, @oliviamunn, @feliciaday, @JohnCleese, @PennJillette, @EddieIzzard, @Seth_Godin – along with many musicians and authors as well and still more joining daily).

What can’t you do on Twitter?  It really can be an amamzing tool.  And if you haven’t done so yet, feel free to friend me and join in on all the Twitter fun – @kat_taf

Recession Pricing: Dine Out Bargains Can Be Found

I”m not sure if other cities do it, but from time to time (couldn’t find the general details online, just the ’09 specifics) LA restaurants join together and participate in DineLA’s Restaurant Week – which is actually typically two weeks.  Orange County also participates, but I don’t know the specifics.

During this time, many of the fancier or pricier restaurant, that you might otherwise be saving for a special occasion, offer up special three-course, fixed price menus. It’s a great deal and lots of fun.  Everyone that I know that has participated all loved that they got to try some place new, that they might not have otherwise tried, at a discounted rate.  The prices break down as follows for lunch and dinner:

Deluxe Dining:     $16    $26
Premier Dining:   $22   $34
Fine Dining:          $28   $44

This year is the first year that I’ve participated.  Interestingly enough, it’s also the first year that it was extended beyond just the allotted two weeks, so in fact, it’s also the first year that many of my friends have attended as well.  I went to Madeleine’s (Yelp) in Pasadena for a pre-movie, girls night out dinner and then I did a business lunch with a girlfriend at Pinot Bistro (Yelp) in Studio City (or is that Sherman Oaks over there?).

In both cases, I was eating at “premier dining” restaurants that I probably would not have otherwise visited.  In both cases, the meal was incredible and the service was great (I was afraid the waitstaff would look down on the lowly bargain diner, but so not the case).  They are both someplace I’d love to return to at some point with my husband.

Earlier this week, the LA Times put out an article on recession priced dine out deals.  While they weren’t quite focused on cheap dining (like the Stand’s Dollar Dog Specials or Mo’s Monday half-off the entire menu or Edison’s Soup Kitchen’s 35 cent special cocktails with free grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup)…they were indeed focused on some great bargains.

So while we’re all tightening out purse strings, it’s nice to know that there still are some good dining deals out there to be had.  When I first moved in with my now husband, we would almost exclusively dine out using the Entertainment Book coupons.  I have a friend that tends to frequent restaurants that allow for BYOB to save some money.  What works in your part of town – or the country?

But more importantly…What’s your secret to saving money when dining out?

INXS Lead Singer Says the Band Fired Him

Remember back in 2005 when INXS was searching for a new lead singer to replace Michael Hutchence?  The band seized the reality TV bandwagon and took the search to TV.  For weeks we got to listen to some great singers adding their twist to the classic INXS songs.

inxs

In the end, they went with Mr. Attitude himself, JD Fortune.  While I’ll admit that he sounded great, I thought he was a bit too cocky and immature. I was rooting for the other guy. But whatever, it wasn’t my band after all and I’ll still have my memories from that show back in the 80’s.

Well, turns out, after 23 or so months of being on the road together, JD says that he’s been fired from the band.  He reported on Canada’s Entertainment Tonight that he’s essentially broke and living out of his car or on friend’s couches now.

Really, 23 months on tour and you’ve got nothing to show for it?  I always thought it was a temporary gig to begin with and that there were no promises beyond that one album.

I think I love this quote from BBC News best as it really seems to sum things up…”the singer admitted his dismissal may have been linked to a cocaine habit he developed while working with the band.”  But yeah, you have no idea why you were fired and they screwed you man.  Whatever.
