Recalling Childhood Memories Through Food

When I’m sick I don’t tend to get whiney and whimpy. I’m more than able to take care of myself. But I do tend to crave food from my childhood. Sadly, this can be a challenge as I either can’t get the foods since I’m not in Jersey or because I never learned how to cook or bake our Hungarian specialties (and in my childlike, bastardized Hungarian, I only seem to mutilate the words, so I can’t even google the recipes – trust me, I’ve tried). Well, as luck would have it, last night we decided to go to one of the local (major), Jewish deli’s, Jerry’s for some chicken noodle soup.

Imagine my surprise when along with our pickles came pickled green tomatoes!!! Dude, I was totally craving these just the other day wondering where I could find green tomatoes so I could try my hand at pickling. Granted, they weren’t quite like my grandmothers (far too much vinegar, and too hard), but it worked.

I also lucked out and remembered that Jerry’s has stuffed cabbage on the menu! Again, not nearly as good as my grandmothers (a bit too dry and sweet), but damn, it hit the spot. I mean, I haven’t had stuffed cabbage in close to 20 or so years. FWIW, the chicken noodle tasted just as good as my grandmothers (especially once I loaded it up on salt – one of the few things outside of eggs, fries and enchiladas that I will salt). Totally grubbing food. And the cherry vodka, cherry coke was kickass as well – and no, my grandmother never made cherry vodka cokes (she was a screwdriver kind of gal!)

As we perused the menu, I got excited once again thinking that I might have some apricot hamantashen (YUM!). Only I recalled the state of the bakery counter and realized that along with all the other traditional Jewish cakes and pastries, due to Rosh Hashanah, they were sold out of everything. Even today, when I sent the hubby back for still more chicken noodle soup, I asked about the hamantashen and nope, all out of the apricot, but I didn’t feel like prune or poppyseed (but I did get some chocolate rugalah as a consolation prize). I’ve got to search this out further though, as I probably haven’t had hamantashen in over 20 years since my grandmother couldn’t make it nearly as well as her mother or her sister, she never tried (and instead excelled at another kind of cookie that I can’t for the life of me remember the name of).

I was basically raised as a Catholic girl eating Hungarian ethnic foods – I know nothing of my mother’s Irish or Scottish heritage. I realized, after visiting Jerry’s that it really doesn’t matter much if one is Polish, Chechz, Hungarian or any other Slavic-Russian state, it’s all pretty much the same food and the same terms, just slightly different recipes. In fact, it’s not so much about being from one country or another it’s all pretty regional. Funny how out here in CA (or I’d guess anyone not familiar with the eastern European communities), it’s really just all considered “Jewish” food regardless of nationality.

EIther way, it was a nice way to indulge in some comfort food from my childhood. And dammit, I’m going get me some apricot hamantashen before the month is out! If Jerry’s is out, I’ll try Art’s or Canters. Worse case, I’ll hit up every Jewish bakery on Fairfax. Now that I know it’s not just a Hungarian thing, I’m sure I can find it.

Here’s a photo of the apricot hamantashen – though in our family it was made in a thin, “bowtie” shape and dusted with powder sugar.

Now can someone please tell me what the poppyseed “strudel” thing is called (though I liked the prune one better). And if anyone has any idea how to make Hungarian Chicken and Rice (with paprika) I’ll be your best friend forever and ever.

I’m Bored.

I’m going on day two of being stranded home, car-less. It’s nothing major, my car is just in the shop for some warranty work and some new belts. But since the hubby works late, we just drop the car off and pick it up before closing. So instead, I’m just hanging out here at home. Bored.

I spent most of yesterday on the phone working out our upcoming Vegas spa package and doing online research for the upcoming new experience. Of course, I could still be doing research and reading text and whatnot, but right now, I’m just relaxing. Bored.

I think I’m going to walk to the grocery store and hit up Starbucks in a bit. I think I just might be ready to embrace the pre-season, pumpkin spice latte. And hey, at least I’d be working off the latte considering it’s about 3 mile trip.

Now aren’t you glad I shared my boredom with you? Now you too can be bored silly just by reading along 😉

How Do You Prefer Things to Be?

In order to effect true positive change in your experience, you must disregard how things are – as well as how others are seeing you – and give more of your attention to the way you prefer things to be.

This will be my focus for today. I seem to have quite a few things knocking at my door and pulling me in different directions. But today, today I will give my attention to the way that I’d prefer things to be.

In fact, today, I’ll be writing that list. Heck, if a list can help attract a mate or a great job (really, I highly suggest it!), then why not use it to focus your energy on the very things you want to attract, right? The key is to focus and not let other concerns, challenges, issues or thoughts pull that focus away.

So what will your attention be on? How do you prefer things to be?

Cha…Cha…Cha…Changes

Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself — Hubert de Givenchy, Vogue, July 1985

I did it. Well, to be honest, I do it quite frequently, about every year or so. But this time, this time it was different. This time I went s.h.o.r.t. Even my hairdresser said it was the shortest she’s cut it in the four+ years that she’s been doing my hair. It’s different, that’s for sure.

I love it though. And I feel like I needed the change. I’m that type of person that goes and gets her haircut when she wants to bring on some new life experiences. I typically get one right before I get a job, or as soon as I get a new job. I like the energy and the process of letting go.

The hubby, well, he hasn’t yet voiced an opinion (as he was a fan of my long hair and tended to like it better straight rather than curly – and that nearly never happened!). He said he’ll wait and see if it grows on him. Then again, he’ll also need to “see” it again when I let it go curly instead of straight. He just needs to remember that it’s only hair and well, mine grows like a well watered, weed and can be full on long again by spring if I so desired.

Either way…bring on the changes, baby!

This is the Life

Ah. Hanging out on the beach. Taking pictures. Sitting poolside. Catching up with old friends. Reading good ‘ol girlie magazines. Truly, this is the life. I think that the only thing that could make this better was if my good friend would partake in some poolside adult beverages with me. A cold glass of wine, or a fruity cosmo would really hit the spot.

Really though, if I couldn’t get her to drink after nearly two years in Junior League (the wine with everything group), then I doubt I can convince her to try it now while we’re catching up. But hey, we’re still having fun and that’s what matters. And since I don’t think I’ll be heading out to SXSW in March, it might be a while until we meet up again.

So here’s to friendship and a night away without our men!

Lather. Rinse. Repeat

Oprah must be running repeats of the Secret or something as I’m getting most of my visitors from “Oprah” or “100 Day Challenge” search terms. I wish I had a better tracker so I could get more information, but oh well. Something to work on, right?

Happy Weekend Everyone! And please, feel free to say Hiya!. I don’t bite. And I’m pretty cool chick if I do say so myself 😉

Summer TV Goodness

Let me begin with telling you how much I love our DVR. Prior to our DVR, we went crazy trying to set up the VCR to record stuff. And of course, we could only record one thing and watch one other thing. Now, we just click once and poof! we get to automatically record anything we’re interested in. In fact, we can record TWO shows at once (this isn’t news, I know). Lovely. Really, what took them so long?

So that said, this is the first summer since 90210 that I’ve gotten involved in summer TV. I typically take advantage of summer reruns and read non-stop. But not this summer (though I am still plowing through 2-4 books every two weeks or so). But when I talk about summer TV, I’m not talking about that crap reality TV that seems to suck everyone in (though I do love me some of that Bret Michaels mess over on VH1). No, I’m talking about the dramas. I got hooked on Burn Notice right from the get go and I love it. It’s like a MacGyver gone 2007. With spies. In Miami. Totally hot. I’ve also been following Saving Grace, but I’m not completely sure it’s for me.

So this Labor Day weekend, thanks to marathons, got caught up on two other series that folks are raving over – Damages and Mad Men. I’m totally digging Damages. More often than not, I can’t figure out the good guys from the bad guys, but man, that’s half the fun. This is some good, good stuff. Mad Men on the other hand, if I wasn’t watching 5 episodes straight through (hey, the hubby was working late last night) I can’t say I’d have kept up with the show. Of course, since it’s summer and not much else is on, I’ll continue watching, but I’m not so sure I’ll stick around next season unless it gets a bit better.

And thanks to our DVR, I also remembered to catch Alton Brown’s Feasting on Asphalt 2. So glad I did. I love Alton Brown, but I can’t always get into Good Eats. But Feasting on Asphalt, I love how he’s all about having fun, eating food and sharing the history. Great fun.

That said, I totally can’t wait until Fall Season starts back up. It’s killing me to avoid those spoilers! Just two more weeks (depending on the networks). I should be able to finish at least two more books by then.

Practicing Gratitude

After having spent a wonderful, if not hot, extended weekend with the hubby, I’m thinking it’s time to show some gratitude (and maybe a little meditation later).

* I am so happy and grateful for my awesome husband and boys. They may sometimes seem to drive me crazy, but really, they’re the best.

* I am so happy and grateful for the change in the weather. Over the next couple days, it will be 10-20 degrees cooler!! I’m SO happy ’bout that. And of course, I’m thrilled to be sleeping in something cooler than 85 in the bedroom.

* I’m so happy and grateful for my work and my upcoming endeavors. Things are really moving along and I’m loving it!

* I’m so happy and grateful for my friends. I love being able to visit with them or being able to just pick up the phone to chat. It’s great knowing that we’re each others’ support systems. It’s good to know where to turn when you need support.

* I’m so happy and grateful that things are financially going along well. Of course, I’m open to anything that the Universe wishes to provide us with, knowing it’s for the good of all involved.

* I’m also so happy and grateful for the killer bargains I’ve gotten over the past couple of days. So much so that I just had to share them with others.

* Overall, I’m just so happy and grateful to just Be.

Good Advice from a Chain Email

Rumor has it this came through Tony Robbins (my dream career!), but you know how far off those emails can be…

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

FIVE. When you say, “I’m sorry,” look the person in the eye.
