It’s Official, It’s Been a Helluva Week

I was trying to recall just why it is I didn’t seem to get around to posting in any of my blogs. I managed to start a couple of posts in each, but never got around to finishing them.

Then I remembered the week – keep in mind, in between all this, I was working on various projects…

Friday: drive down to Temecula for a pre-dinner meeting

Saturday: biz meeting in Fallbrook, drive back home

Sunday: different biz meeting in LA

Monday: 2-3 hour doctor appointment

Tuesday: business lunch and evening networking event

Wednesday: only day with nothing planned and dinner at home – worked on finalizing ’08 taxes

Thursday: LWL event

Friday: date night with hubs (still talked business)

Saturday: avoiding the intense Valley heatwave and headed out for two movies &  dinner with a friend

Today: relaxing day at home, in the AC avoiding all the smoke and ash from the nearby fires

La Canada Fires

La Canada Fires

This week, I’m happy to say, is much more low key and I’m really looking forward to it.  Now if we can only get the cooler temperatures we had a couple weeks back and get rid of those nasty fires then all would be good.

Best Laid Plans and All That

So here I was Friday, posting about how important it is to remember to put ourselves first and focus on some self-care.  Would you believe that I never actually got around to any of that?

See, I wrote that post on Thursday so I could be free to run all my pre-out of town errands on Friday.  Next thing I know, I’m heading home from dropping the dog off at the boarders for his sleep away camp (man, he loves this place!) and my husband calls to tell me that he’ll be home shortly. Um, at that point, I hadn’t even packed our overnight bag.

So yeah, not only did I go to not one, but two extended business meetings (one in Temecula and one here in LA on Sunday), with embarrassing grey-studded hair, but I also never really got around to taking care of my brows.  Heck, I was rushing to pack our bag that I even forgot to pack mascara and the shampoo and conditioner.  At least if I’d have had mascara I could temporarily cover those grey hairs.

How embarrassing.  The good news, it was pulled back into a ponytail, so for the most part, it wasn’t visible.

Needless to say, I’m not so sure I can wait until right before classes begin for all this.  In fact, I’m thinking I need to book things ASAP.

And write my damn syllabus already!

Ugh!

Let’s Get Shallow: Making Time for Personal Care

Threading
I don’t know about you, but sometimes, time just seems to get away from me.  Heck, sometimes LIFE seems to get away from me.  One minute and I’m on track and working my butt off.  All is good.  The next minute I look in the mirror and I’m a mess.

How did I let that happen?

I know we hear all the time that we should remember to make time for ourselves. You know what they say, if mama ain’t happy, ain’t no body happy. But I tend to think of all that as making exercise or yoga, or meditation or whatever a priority. You know, remembering to work free time into your schedule. Not getting a haircut or getting my brows done.

Well, I don’t have much of a problem working free time into my schedule (the joy of running your own business). I remember to schedule time to visit with my friends and colleagues. I even manage to remember to take a vacation day or sick day from time to time.

Apparently, what I can’t seem to remember is to get a haircut, touch up color or fix my brows. It’s bad enough I cut (not trimmed…CUT!) my own bangs a couple weeks ago.

Man, when did I become such a sight?

For the past couple of weeks, I kept telling myself that I would just get it all taken care of before school starts up again. You know, before I have to get back into the public eye. But judging from the look of the alternatively colored hairs I’m seeing popping up, I don’t think I can wait much longer. Let alone wait another 3-4 weeks.

The good news, at least for me, is that I do my own color. So I just needed to run out to the nearest CVS and pick up a box of Fabulous Brunette #5 and get to work on those unruly brows while I’m waiting and I’ll be good to go.

Good thing too since we leave later this afternoon for a business meeting down San Diego way. So all this self-care stuff got me thinking…I can’t be the only one here. What do you tend to let go of or put off when you get busy? Or are you the type of person that keeps all your self-care and maintenance scheduled at all times?

I just need to schedule a facial and an adjustment and my self-care, remember to take time out for me time is complete.

When the Cat Escapes

So I had planned to write about my Remote Area Medical experience from Tuesday. You know, it was their last day and all that so I thought it would be worth writing about.

Then the cat escaped.  Twice.  Argh!

Let’s start with the basics, the adorable little guy below came with the husband (the pupster, came with me – luckily they co-exist wonderfully).  When he lived with my hubs, he had a temporary kitty door that led out to the deck.  He never expressed any interest in jumping down and exploring further, so all was good.  From time to time, he’d run out the front door and roll around on the stoop a bit.

How Much is That Charlie in The Window?

Once he moved in with me (and the pupster) he lost that outdoor privilege.  Not because he was bad or anything, but because we don’t really have a safe space for him. So basically, he’s an indoor cat.  He will from time to time run out the front door or escape out the back if the screen door isn’t latched. Typically, he doesn’t go far and just rolls around on the sidewalk or visits the flower beds in hopes of finding critters and bugs.

Yesterday, I left to run some errands.  Turns out, the dog lead got caught in the door and the door didn’t close tightly.  I had my hands full with the dry cleaning, so I never noticed it didn’t click shut.

Fast foward about and hour and a half…

I come home and see the door is open just a crack.  Turns out the dog’s collar blocked the door from opening any wider.  While the pupster couldn’t escape (much to his dismay), the cat could squeeze through.

And squeeze he did.

I didn’t find him anywhere inside (or at first glance outside).  After running through our tiny apartment, checking all the known hiding spaces, crying out his name, I open the front door and there he is, crying to come back inside.

Since we’d been to the vet earlier, and he was a bit traumatized, I thought this was the end.

It wasn’t.

Later in the day, I put the babygate up at the front door to bring in some of the cooler evening air.  While I was reading on the couch, I heard the mastermind cat, trying to escape yet again.  But I stopped it.  Until he realized I was in the back office working on the computer and he stealthily escaped again. I found him outside on the front stoop just sitting.  Of course, I insisted he come in right that instant and I shut the door.

A couple hours later, I’m cooking dinner and I realize the screen door is open.  Open as in, someone snuck out.  Again.  There he was, just rolling around the sidewalk meowing up a storm, as if saying “look at me mom!”

The hubs gets home later and poof! again, the cat bolted out before he could even walk in the door.  And yes, he’s been known to do this from time to time. Argh!

I don’t know what’s going on here. Maybe it’s all payback for taking him in the car to the vet – he didn’t mind the actual shots, just being forced into the carrier and the actual car ride. Either way, I’ve had enough.  No more unauthorized outside visits.  My heart can’t take it.

So I ask you, what’s a gal to do?  Aside from making sure all doors are fully and completely shut from now on.  Do you have an escape artist cat?  What do you do?

My Top Five Travel Destination Wish List

Back in July, one of the business coaches I follow wrote a post about her top five travel destinations.  I’ve been sitting around pondering this since then.  Right now, with the mere thought of school starting up again shortly (and no, I haven’t yet written my syllabus thankyouverymuch), I’d be happy to go anywhere nice – no, Fresno didn’t count – for a weekend away.  I’m not picky though, I’d even be happy to go somewhere in October if we can’t squeeze it in right now.

Then again, I’m really missing my friends back in Albuquerque.  More so now that I’ve been working their websites and helping them get their social media on.  In that case, I’d also be thrilled to set up a quick business trip (and have the chance to enjoy some green chile again).  I’ve decided set that one in motion and am using the network of my friends, to help to arrange a group that’s up for a training.  So I see that one happening within the next month or so.

But on top of my simple requests to go anywhere, here are my current top five, dream vacations (in no particular order)…

Hydra

Greek Isles

I fell in love with Greece back when I was in high school.  After my graduation, I was lucky enough to enjoy 24 days in 13 countries.  Yes, it was a whirlwind trip, but I did get to spend 2 or 3 nights on the tiny island of Hydra and really fell in love.  Well we may have had bed bugs (and I still bear the scars from them), the island itself was glorious.  I’ve been dying to go back ever since.  And I’m sure this time, I won’t get quite so drunk on the Ouzo (hey, I was 17!)

tahiti

Tahiti

When we were planning our honeymoon five years ago, this was my dream honeymoon.  With a workaholic husband, it was perfect to imagine him having to be unplugged and away from work the entire time.  Plus, that glorious, blue-green water and those grass huts right over the water.  Talk about romantic.  This was what I wanted.  And still, this is what I want….nothing but water, sun (sunscreen), a good book or three, and my husband in a hammock and I’ll be fine.  Really, what more could you ask for out of a vacation?

windmills_spain

Spain

I’ll be honest, until I started watching Spain: On the Road Again on PBS, I never really had much of a desire to see Spain outside of visiting with a dear friend (and former teaching colleague).  Now that I’ve seen the entire country through the eyes of Gwyneth, Mario, Bittman and Claudia (and my friend’s photos and stories) I want to see it all!  And I want that manchego and Rioja.  And windmills, I want to see those windmills.  And in the meantime, I’d get to visit with a dear friend.  A perfect vacation in my mind.

amsterdam

Amsterdam

Amsterdam was one of the countries I was lucky enough to visit in my whirlwind European trip back in the late 80’s.  There was something about it that I loved.  The canals, the small feel in a big city. The crazy nightlife…all of it works.  Then there are the museums (Anne Frank’s attic hideaway is mind blowing to witness in person).  This time around though, I’d like to also step out and see a the countryside.   Again, the windmills draw me in.  And who wouldn’t love to see tulips for miles?

machu_picchu

Peru

This has been on my must travel list since I was in 4th or 5th grade.  I remember learning about the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World in social studies.  And while I just now realized that Machu Picchu is not actually on this list, for some reason, it was during this time that I first learned about it.  And ever since then, I’ve wanted to go.  Sadly, my teaching friend (the one that now lives in Spain) once lived and taught in Lima, Peru as well, but I wasn’t able to visit her.  I swore that I’d max out my credit cards if I could just get myself there.  Unfortunately, I was in grad school and my credit cards were already maxed out.

What’s on your list?  Where would you love to go for the first time or revisit if you could go anywhere in the world?

What an Amazing Experience

I’ll admit it, I’ve been talking about the Remote Area Medical organization for a couple weeks now. They were coming to LA for their longest gig thus far (eight days) to service the under and uninsured. Their goal was to serve 20,000 or so.

We showed up for our shift on Saturday and there were lines everywhere. In fact, our job wound up being line control in one of the vision services.  There wasn’t all too much organization and we were told to just ask around and see where we might be needed.

I’m not a fan of dentists, so rows and rows of dental procedures (and the sound of drills) was NOT my thing so we walked right on by.  Someone suggested we head over to vision, so we ended up in Vision II (first, basic exam was over, now onto the prescription exam).

We spent the majority of our time there working the end of the line – the hubs took the middle and I took the end.  It was a pretty slow moving process since around lunch (when we arrived) there were only 2-3 eye doctors working.  Eventually, things picked back up again and there were about 6-8 or so available.  Even so, not everyone got seen and a good chunk of my “end” people were sent home without care, told to come back on Sunday.

Had I known they needed more medical, dental and vision doctors, I would have picked up the phone book and started calling.  I remember what it’s like to be broke or barely making ends meet (in my case, in college) and being in serious need for medical care.  And since I’m not a fan of the dentist, you better believe I put that one off as long as possible.  So I get it.

Free services, even if it takes all day – hell, for some it took 2-3 days – is worth it…if you can get it.  I’m looking forward to my next shift on Tuesday (RAM’s last day).  I’m sure it will be gut wrenching knowing we’re turning people away and that there isn’t a come back tomorrow for them.  But I also know it’s doing a lot of good.

Check out the MSNBC video below for some scenes from the event those first couple of days…

I Met Iron Chef Michael Symon!

I’ve been lucky enough to have either met or bumped into a celebrity or two since moving to LA. Actually, I’ve met some pretty cool people. But one of my coolest experiences was this past Thursday when I met Iron Chef Michael Symon.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch party for the upcoming Cook or Be Cooked Wii game (created in partnership between Namco Bandai and the Food Network). I’m a casual Food Network watcher – we regularly watch a couple shows and then we casually watch a couple others.

One show we do watch regularly is Dinner: Impossible. I loved the short session with Chef Michael Symon and his pork-focused craziness (my husband on the other hand is a Robert Irvine fan). So to me, getting to see Chef Michael in person, and watch him give a cooking demo was pretty cool. He was so cool and joking the whole time while cooking and making sure to answer any questions we might have (and you better believe I asked questions).

As for the Wii part of things. Well, I’ve never been much of a gamer. To be honest, I don’t seem to have the necessary eye/hand coordination needed for these things when it counts. So I’ve never felt the need to buy any sort of gaming console myself.

That said, I’ve played a few Wii games with friends and family and have always had a good time. Cook or Be Cooked was no different. Once you got the hang of it (and that damned coordination thing), I was really cooking – pun intended. I had a blast.

Since they had four TVs set up for the event, the sound was actually turned off until the cook-off challenge between Chef Michael in the kitchen, and Chef Mike on the Wii. Turns out, this game can actually teach you how to cook.

You learn about real world cooking times, basic knife skills, and other cooking tips and techniques. It really was quite cool. If you don’t believe me, check out the pictures below.

Oh and that Michael Symon…he can cook! We loved his mother’s meatballs and the BBQ duck confit, corn crepe tacos (OMG! these were awesome!)

It Was Long Ago and It Was Far Away

There are just some songs that the moment you hear them, you raise the volume and start singing and dancing regardless of where you are or who might be watching.

Yesterday, I was reminded of this joyful experience not once, but twice with Meatloaf’s Paradise by the Dashboard Light. The first time, it popped up in my iTunes shuffle mix. The second time, I was driving home from an event and it came on the radio (man, was my volume up today when I got back in my car). Then today, I was reminded of my college days with an old Housemartins video I stumbled upon in a graphic artist’s blog.

Thank the Powers that Be for YouTube…

Paradise By The Dashboard Lights – Meatloaf

I will say, I’ve noticed that if you’re not just the right age, you could really care less about Meatloaf and this awesomest of awesome songs. My husband, a music fanatic, had never even heard this song (or thought enough of it to remember it) before I played it for him (at full volume, of course) – then again, he also didn’t know that Meatloaf played Eddie in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  His younger sister also hadn’t heard the song when I had it played at my wedding. My younger friends at the wedding also didn’t recognize it. So my totally inaccurate, non-scientific theory is…if you’re not between 38-43, this song means nothing to you.  And that’s a shame if I do say so myself.

Days Like This Were Made For a Hammock

hammock_LivinginMonrovia

Today, in the sunny San Fernando Valley, it’s a breezy 84 degrees.  It’s the perfect sort of weather to hang out outside (in the shade). If I had my dream house, with my dream backyard, the boys and I would be working out on the patio or swinging along on a hammock.

Sadly, we have no shade trees, no lounge chairs, no hammock and well, no patio or even a backyard to use.  Such is apartment life.  Of course, that hasn’t stopped the boys and I from spending some time just relaxing out on the front stoop.

And I know that I’ll have that laptop ready, relaxing backyard in no time!
