I Have App Envy No More!!

Now, I’m just in need of some iPhone app suggestions.

iphone

Yes it’s true.  We got ourselves an iPhone.  I say we because well, we’re sharing it. Basically, its taking the business number and handling all of that. Plus, its enabling my husband to play around with apps and learn how to design them himself.

Truth be told, since I’m the one that works from home and carries the purse, I’ll most likely be the one that carries the phone.  Which means….I get to get me some fun apps!

So what do you suggest?  What do you have that’s fun?  What did you get that you actually find useful?  What did you  get that was a waste of money no matter how cool the reviews were?

Spill it!!

As it is, I can’t wait to start playing the Oregon Trail!  Can I get a flashback worthy woohoo!!  Here’s to dysentery…

Back to School, Back to Beauty: Soak Nails

IMG_7018

I start back at school in just over a week.  Needless to say, that requires some shopping (yay!) and some basic grooming. Working from home all summer, and honestly not getting it out all that much to socialize outside of with friends, I’ve kind of let things go a bit.

Coincidentally, Spa Week starts next week. And you better believe I’ll be taking full advantage of those $50 treatments…massage one day, a facial the next. Can’t wait.

Officially, I started the grooming process last week. A friend invited me to Soak Nails in Encino. My friend was attracted to this Nail Spa from across the city. She was interested in the fact that they used Spa Ritual Nail Lacquers (they’re vegan polishes that are free of DBP, formaldehyde and toluene from parent company Orly). And who wouldn’t want a much needed, luxurious pedicure. You better believe I went along with it.

It’s located in a strip mall off Ventura with valet parking. In LA, free valet in a covered garage is a pretty good score. There’s even a Coffee Bean if you want to get your caffeine fix before heading in.

Once you enter, you’ll notice that it’s not like any other nail salon. First off, it looks more like a spa than a nail salon – and it smells more like a spa than a nail salon. There’s a front desk where you sign in and check out. From there they take you to the waiting room space where you can relax and check out the glossy magazines. Your tech will pick you up from there and escort you to your chair.

IMG_7015

The chair set up is quite amazing. They have gauzy curtains hanging between each station that they pull back if you’re there with a friend, but otherwise, lend an air of privacy. The foot basin is probably the most comfortable set up I’ve experienced. I could actually sit back and relax and not have to sit in any sort of uncomfortable position while the gal worked on me (then again, maybe other people don’t have issues with this).

You don’t sift through bottles and bottles of color. Instead, they have nail swatches (for lack of a better word) at each station and you pick your color by number. The cool thing here, they actually log your number in your account so you can pick the same nail color (or technician) the next time you stop in. I love that personalized touch.

They have the pretty standard, higher-end priced packages (I’ll let you read that yourself) with the difference extras that can be added on. It’s definitely more expensive than your average corner nail salon, but the experience alone makes it worth it (in my case, for my 3 month or so splurge). And much like at a spa, they’ll provide you with lemon water, cappuccinos or a variety of teas while you get pampered.

IMG_7017

I only have two complaints with the experience…1) my massage chair didn’t seem to work as well as most other spa chairs – it seemed pretty weak and only lasted about 10 minutes or so and 2) the leg massage my gal provided was a little weak – that could have been my fault since I didn’t speak up (was too engrossed in catching up with my friend).

It’s been a week and my toes still look amazing. I can’t say my flip-flop wearing soles have fared quite as well, but that’s fine. It’s nothing a little pumice file or ped-egg and a good lotion can’t fix. What’s more important to me is that the polish not only lasts, but still looks good, hasn’t worn off and the color is still true with plenty of shine.

The shorter, to the point, Twitterized version…Went to Soak Nails and loved it. They treat you well with great personalized touches. Colors are amazing. Definitely worth the splurge!

PS – I got in a bit of trouble taking these photos and had to talk my way into allowing them to let me keep them. Otherwise, there would be more to really showcase the place.

Michael Jackson’s Final Resting Place

It was rumored some time last week that Forest Lawn would be where Michael Jackson would be laid to rest. As early as Friday, the paparazzi and the news vans have been parked, ready and waiting. Now that it’s been made official, the crowds have descended upon our side of the Hollywood Hills.

I’m sure the crowds will be massive after the memorial service starting this evening. Hopefully, the family will opt for an unmarked grave much like Humphrey Bogart. Otherwise, I’m sure it will be some crazy Jim Morrison-like gravesite.

It’s Monday So Let’s Have a Giveaway!

Enter for Your Chance to Win an Envirosax Bag!

The good folks from Envirosax contacted me and asked if I’d be interested in doing a giveaway here.  I’m all about using reusable bags for shopping that you better believe I jumped at the opportunity.

The goal was to get it up about a week ago and tell you all how great these bags would be for the dad in your life.  But as you all know, I’ve been so busy that I just didn’t get around to it.  I was also waiting for the bags to arrive so I could see just which designs I was giving away.

I don’t yet have my own Envirosax bag (well, when you have 10+ large canvas sacks, there’s just no need to buy the bags), so this was my first time seeing them in person.  Wow, not only are the bags HUGE, the designs are just way cute.  So as they say on their site, you can spread “the eco-friendly message with style!”  And the convenient part is that they fold up nicely so that you can keep one in your bag – no more forgetting your bag back at the car.

RG.B2.D-2T
I think my only complaint about the bags is that I’d love for a longer handle.  These bags can hold SO much stuff, that it can often make carrying the bags difficult.  With a longer strap that can go over your shoulder you can not only carry more weight, but you can also have your hands free to do the important stuff like unlock the door.  For many, I’m sure the handles are just fine (and can indeed slip over the shoulder), I’ve just gotten so used to my canvas bags with their long straps, that I like when my bags sit lower on my body and not right under my armpit.

Eh, it’s all preference and these bags are so cute (and fold up so tiny), that it more than makes up for it.

Be sure to follow them on Facebook as well, as they’ve been known to host more giveaways there.

To enter for your chance to win one of these two bags, just leave me a comment telling me why you’d love to win one or where you would use your bag.  The winner will be chosen at random through Random.org.

Fell free to tweet, blog or post this on your Facebook for extra chances to win – just make sure you give me the link so I can verify the posts.

The contest will close on Sunday, June 21st at 11:59 PM (Pacific)

Good luck!!

Some Random Thoughts After Birth-iversary Week

Man, what a week it’s been.  It’s officially over though, so don’t worry.  No more talk of anniversaries or birthdays (though there is still the family  celebration to come in June or so).  It has been wonderful though.  Five fun-filled years with the coolest of cool guys and celebrating forty and sharing it all with friends.  Just awesome, I tell ya. I may get some photos up later today, it all depends on how much work I can get done.

On to the randomish thoughts…

  • I got my nails done on Friday so I’d have pretty nails for my dinner.  It worked, they looked amazing.  As you know, manicures don’t seem to last too long on me, so I actually showered on Saturday wearing rubber gloves.  I woke up this morning and yes, you guessed it, three of my nails are already chipped.  It was fun while it lasted I guess.
  • I had a very odd dream about tea last night.  For some reason, there were timers set up to cups of tea and no one else knew why.  I’m sure there was more than that, but it was just such an odd dream overall, I’ll just g’head and blame Naja over at Naja Tea for posting about her tea on her Facebook page (and trust me, it IS some yummy tea).
  • It’s surprisingly cool today.  Though I was wasn’t expecting it, I’m actually quite enjoying it.  It made for a pleasant, if not chilly night last night too.  But I’ll take it over those 100+ days that I just know are right around the corner.
  • To finish up the birth-iversary celebrations, we went to McCabe’s last night to see Carrie Rodriquez.  She was incredible!  She added some attitude and sass to a couple of her songs that I just loved.  If you haven’t heard her yet, check out the LiveDaily Session she did with my husband last summer when her album came out.
  • Watching Carrie play her violin and other four-stringed, guitar-like instruments makes me wish that I’d continued playing violin when I was younger.  I wasn’t a fan of playing the classical stuff, but I used to love playing Blondie on my violin.  I I’d known then that there are ways I could have play the violin and still rocked out, I think I would have kept going with it.  To this day, I love watching both violinists and fiddle players doing their stuff.  When it’s classical, it’s pure beauty.  When it’s more rockin’ it’s the energy behind the song.  Either way, I love it.
  • I’m not really enjoying our book club book this month.  It’s a British book called The Reading Group.  It has far too many characters to keep straight and well, to be honest, I find it to be a bit too boring, bordering on depressing.  I just can’t really get into it.
  • I’m going to be getting an assistant soon (and once I said this out loud, the annoying twitching immediately stopped – love that).  My plan is to have the assistant work on the contests and updating the blog and then I can focus on my clients and my other two blogs (including this one). It should also help me to find the energy to finally do the redesign on the CC homepage.  Overall, it should work out well.
  • I don’t think I’ve ready ANY blogs in the past two or so weeks.  Wait, that’s not completely true, I subscribe to 3 business blogs and I read those when they come in.  But that’s about it.  I really need to pop on over and see what you all have been up to (especially if I don’t follow you on Facebook).

I’m sure I have much more pointless crap sheer geniusness just swimming around in my head to bore you to tears with share, but I’ve got tons to get to today.  So as much as I’d like to hang out and chat blog, I must step away.

Feel free to give me a twitterized version (I won’t hold you to a 140 character limit) of what you’ve been up to in the comments 😉

PS – I haven’t reread this post for typos or poor grammar so I apologize in advance.

Things I’m Totally Loving Right Now

I’m going to keep this short and sweet because well, I’m exhausted and should really be heading to bed.  But there are a couple of products out there the I’m loving so much I just have to share.

I think for now I’m just going to list them, and then tomorrow I’ll go through and add my thoughts.

  • Lavender drawer liner from Sommer Designs
  • Stainless Steel Sharpie
  • Food that Should Taste Good Chocolate Tortilla Chips
  • Burt’s Bees Apricot Baby Oil
  • Maybelline Lash Stiletto
  • Flora by Gucci (I am in LOVE with this – received a sample from Sephora)
  • Too Faced Shadow Insurance

There may be a couple other things that also get added, but this is on my mind right now and just had to rave about it.  I’ll be back later to do into the details.

Are You Ready to Share Your Deepest Darkest Secrets…on TV?

secret

I’m beginning to realize that I have the coolest job out there…being a blogger and all that. I get free stuff to try out and write about. I get invites to very cool parties (that I rarely actually get around to attending). And now, I got approached by a producer for Lifetime TV! Yes, you read that right…producers from Lifetime contacted me!*

No, they don’t want me to be a guest on one of their shows or to be in one of Nora Robert’s next movies (I just love her books!). But they are hoping that I can help them find some SoCal folks with some secrets that might be willing to share.

It seems quite cool. It’s for a new, prime-time, docu-styled, non-exploitative show where people are asked to tell their stories and share their secrets. They are seeking willing men and women who have kept a secret close to their heart and now would like to reveal the truth to someone who will be significantly impacted by your revelation.

Right now, they’re looking for two specific secrets…

  • the Secret Crush – Do you have a secret crush on someone that you work with or have known for a long time? Are you ready to tell them? They’re looking for someone who has been crushing on someone for quite sometime…someone they know that knows them but doesn’t have a clue about the secret.
  • keeping secrets from your spouse/partner/family – Are you a shopaholic who has run up your credit cards and fears telling your husband? Are you a compulsive gambler and it has now affected your family finances or relationships? You need to be willing to come clean and get things fixed (with the help from their staff).

The act of sharing your secret could help both you and others and it may allow you to find peace and closure. You and the person you are telling, will be supported through the process and will not feel alone in dealing with your revelation. They assure me that they are experiences in honoring sensitive and intimate stories (hello, they’re Lifetime for peet’s sake!) and they’re not interested in any revelation that would exploit you or others.

You can contact them directly via email or you can show up at an open casting call this Saturday, April 25th at Space Station Casting Studio, 1258 N. Highland Ave. (Corner of Highland and Fountain) from noon – 5:00PM.

So don’t worry, you won’t be sharing sharing your secret here in LA Blogger Gal Land for all the world to read. In fact, aside from this post, I’m completely out of the loop and will having nothing to do with anything. This was all just done as a favor.

Although I wouldn’t be offended if I was offered a +1 to a Tori and Dean party or something similarly cool as a thank you 😉

* Granted, it’s not Oprah (not everyone can be like my good pal, Sarah, over at Mar Vista Mom), but it’s still pretty damn cool if you ask me!
